There was a time when actor Grant Gustin's name was synonymous with The Flash. Debuting on The CW for the first time back in 2013, The Flash formed the epicentre of the network's superhero programming and ran successfully for almost a decade till it was closed down in 2023.

With the former DCEU coming to the end of its road and the new DCU headed by James Gunn taking its place, The Flash seems to have been put on the backburner. Regardless, Grant Gustin recently stated in a podcast with Michael Rosenbaum that he is willing to reprise his role as Barry Allen.

Undoubtedly, The Flash hits a nostalgic note for a lot of the audience who grew up watching Gustin as the superhero. With the failure of the recent movie starring Ezra Miller in 2023, it seems to have closed the door on any future iterations of the DCU property. Nevertheless, fans are hopeful of Gustin returning to portray the superhero. From what he said during the podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, it can also be inferred that Gustin is interested in a behind-the-camera role as well.

Here's everything that we know.

What did Grant Gustin say about returning as The Flash?

Actor Michael Rosembaum is no stranger to DC and recently invited Grant Gustin to his Inside of You podcast where he famously interviews actors and celebrities about their experience of making it big in the film and television industry. During the podcast, Rosenbaum posed the question to Gustin whether the latter wished to reprise his role as Barry Allen. To this, Gustin answered:

"Yeah, of course, there's a lot of things that I'd have to like ask... not for, but about. I'd be more interested in the (creative side)."

Fans of the The CW show have been excited ever since, especially as the above mentioned comment hints at a potential behind-the-camera role for Gustin in case he reprises his former role. There has been, however, no official confirmation regarding Gustin's involvement in the new DCU and at this point it's only speculation whether he shall ever don his superhero costume again.

It is noteworthy to mention in this context that Gustin had previously expressed his willingness to return as the superhero in the new DCU. Gustin was seen mentioning in a video that surfaced on the Instagram page of Arrowverse Canaries, stating:

"Yeah, if James Gunn asked me to play The Flash, I would do it. I trust James Gunn."

The Flash seems to be on the backburner

Despite running successfully for almost a decade and totaling at a whopping one hundred and eighty episodes, the show failed to transfer its popularity to the 2023 film directed by Andy Muschietti.

The film, featuring Ezra Miller as the superhero, delivered rather underwhelming box office collections. As a result, DCU is seemingly hesitant to dip its hands into Barry Allen's narrative again and is consequently exploring other properties by greenlighting projects such as Clayface.
