Pedro Pascal’s Joel’s death in The Last of Us Season 2 might just be the most excruciating death we've witnessed this year, and we’re only four months in. Season 2 Episode 2 was released on April 21, 2025, and a new episode is set to drop tonight at 9 PM ET. The one question on everybody’s mind is: Was Episode 2 the last we saw of Pedro Pascal on The Last of Us?

Joel was brutally murdered by Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), to the shock of fans — players, and non-players of the game alike. There are still five episodes left in this season of The Last of Us, which will probably be spent with Ellie on her quest for revenge. Joel and Ellie’s bond was the heart of The Last of Us, but now that Joel is dead, it’s unclear how the show will proceed without his presence.

Well, it appears The Last of Us is not done with Pedro Pascal’s Joel as of now, as he is set to return for some flashback scenes in The Last of Us Season 2.

Pedro Pascal’s Joel appeared in the first two episodes of The Last of Us Season 2, and he is set to appear in four of the seven episodes. So, he will be returning for more appearances, possibly as flashbacks for Ellie, in two more episodes.

Joel’s death was extremely sudden, so we will possibly see Joel’s flashbacks through the other characters in the show, mainly Ellie, to add some depth and fill in the gaps left because of the time jump between the two seasons and because of Joel’s death. The flashbacks will possibly explore Ellie and Joel’s uneasy relationship in the time jump, adapting key moments from the game.

Additionally, the trailer released for The Last of Us Season 2 features some scenes with Pascal’s Joel that have not yet been featured on the show, so we already have a sneak peek of the scenes that we’ll be seeing Joel in. The Last of Us Part II video game also has flashback scenes with Joel in them. The Last of Us Season 2 is adapted from the first part of the video game, and the show seems to be sticking to the game so far, so it gives the fans who’ve played the games ideas about what flashback scenes will feature Joel.

Will Joel appear in The Last of Us Season 3?

The Last of Us has already been renewed for a Season 3 while Season 2 is still releasing episodes weekly. It is extremely good news for fans that Joel has more appearances in store for Season 2, and to make it even better, he might even have appearances in Season 3 of the show.

Season 2 of the show is only adapting the first part of The Last of Us Part II of the game, and Season 3 would be adapting the later parts of the game. In the game, Joel appears for flashbacks throughout Part II, so there is a very high possibility that Joel will also return for appearances in The Last of Us Season 3. Some flashback scenes in the game only make sense after some parts of the story have played out, so they have to be placed accordingly in the show, making Pedro Pascal’s return almost certain, for the sake of chronology.

Pedro Pascal’s Joel is no longer a part of the present timeline, but his character is the heart of Ellie’s story, so the show will possibly resort to flashbacks in the upcoming episodes, as well as the upcoming season, as comfort for Ellie as she deals with the loss, as well as a catalyst for her dark vengeance against Abby.
