Hey, S.W.A.T. fans on CBS, I know you're all curious: is there going to be a S.W.A.T. Season 9? Well, it's still unknown as of now, but don't worry too much. The Executive Producer, Shawn Ryan, said they haven't had the official talk about renewing it yet. He's positive about the show's fan love and how it's still great with the new ideas from the showrunner, Andy Dettman.
The only thing that might mess with this is Skydance buying the place that owns CBS, Paramount Global. So keep your fingers crossed, S.W.A.T. fans, but it's looking like there might be some good news coming your way!
Ryan told Deadline:
“It’s all uncertain. We’re just going to continue to make the best show we can.”
Fans hold onto hope that the 20-Squad will make a comeback.
S.W.A.T.’s past cancellations and renewals
S.W.A.T. has proven to be a survivor in TV, having gone through the cancelation gauntlet more than once. In 2023, the news came out that the show would wrap up after its sixth season, but boy, did the fans have something to say about that! They didn't take it lying down. So, after talks between CBS and Sony Pictures Television, they had a change of heart.
They decided to give it one more go, announcing a seventh season that was set to be its grand finale. They called it the "final run" of the show, which made it sound like S.W.A.T. was going out with a bang.
Surprising everyone, in May 2024 the TV series got picked up again for a full-fledged 22-episode eighth season!
S.W.A.T. had quite the journey staying on air, with its future often hanging by a thread. It's produced by Sony Pictures Television, which makes the money side of things a bit of a headache. In 2023, there were rumors that squabbles over the number of episodes in an order could have been the end of it all.
But somehow, Sony managed to work out deals that kept everyone happy, especially the network, and maintained the show's home base in Los Angeles, which isn't something you see every day in the entertainment industry.
Shawn Ryan had some words for the folks who kept the faith, mentioning both the viewers and the higher-ups at the network for sticking by them.
“The show is beloved at CBS and by our audience,” he said.
Corporate changes may affect S.W.A.T. Season 9’s future
The soon-to-happen deal where Skydance buys Paramount Global is making things a bit complicated for the show's chances of getting picked up for more seasons. Ryan isn't quite sure how this change in ownership will affect the way CBS decides whether to keep the show going or not.
“Economics are going to play into things,” he noted.
This makes us think that there might be more to the decision than just how well is doing with viewers and how much the fans love it.
It's a good sign that the person in charge of the network, Amy Reichenbach, has said she's a fan. Even though there are challenges, the people who work on the show, like the actors and the team behind the scenes, are still dedicated.
Ryan, one of the main guys on the show, talked to CinemaBlend and said that even after all this time,
“Creatively, I’m happy to say it hasn’t dropped a step.”
Thanks to its devoted fans and history of beating the odds, S.W.A.T. has a good shot at keeping its spot on the air.
You can catch Season 8 on Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on CBS, and then binge it the next day on Paramount+.
