As Creature Commandos gears up for streaming the season finale, fans are excited for what's in store for the event episode, "A Very Funny Monster." To celebrate the occasion, David Harbour sat down with Therese Lacson from Collider for an interview. In it, he expressed his desire to play Eric Frankenstein in the live-action too.
What did David Harbour say about returning as Eric Frankenstein from Creature Commandos in live action?
In the interview, David Harbour spoke about the chance of returning as his Creature Commandos character in live action. However, first, he spoke about his experience of working with the series creator and DC Studios CO-CEO James Gunn. He said this about working with James Gunn:
"It was amazing. He's an extremely generous, extremely smart big kid, and I think he has such passion for this whole thing. In a weird way, I didn't expect, for this animated show, him to have as much passion and investment and involvement as he does."
He further stated,
"Sometimes animation can be the product of a different department, and it can be just something that's tacked onto a larger machine of movies or whatever. This was his baby, and it felt like he was there shepherding the whole thing. It felt like he was there bringing the joy and the passion. It was just great.
Later, on the chances of appearing as the character in live-action, David Harbour said thus:
"Are you putting it out there, Therese? Okay, cool. I'm just like, “Go ahead. Put it out there!” Because I do think it'd be super fun. We talked about it casually. There's nothing planned, but I talked to him a little bit about the realities of what that would look like in terms of CG or practical effects, and he had all kinds of different thoughts and ideas. But I think they're still building their universe, and that's fun."
He also added,
As they build it, I think they're gonna see what people like or what works, and that's gonna be a component to what they go forward with. But it is such a fun idea to have, like, Batman run into an angry Frankenstein, or Superman, or whatever! It's just fun that all these characters exist in the same universe, and who knows where they'd end up? It’d be kind of cool."
Based on the quote above, nothing is official as of yet. It also remains to be seen if Eric Frankenstein will survive the events of the Creature Commandos finale or not. Apart from Creature Commandos, the actor also discussed other projects like Stranger Things and Thunderbolts* in the same interview.
What is Creature Commandos about?
Created by James Gunn, Creature Commandos follows the events of Peacemaker Season 1, where Amanda Waller's daughter revealed her mother's Task Force X. Now that the world knows about Waller's mistreatment of prisoners, the Congress has debarred Waller from using human prisoners for black-ops missions. However, Waller finds a loophole in the Congress's reprimand.
She forms a Task Force "M." Instead of humans, the team is made up of monsters. The synopsis of the series reads:
"Creature Commandos tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails…they’re your last, worst option."
What Creature Commandos news did James Gunn reveal?
On unrelated news, for Christmas, James Gunn pleasantly surprised fans with news about the season finale of Creature Commandos. When a fan asked Gunn about the possibility of a post-credit scene in any of the episodes in the series. Gunn confirmed the existence of one but mentioned that's included in the concluding moments of the finale.
There are rumors that the Creature Commandos finale's post-credit scene will include a teaser, a significant character from James Gunn's DCU, or even an actor's voice, confirming DCU casting news. However, the post-credits scene could also turn out to be a funny gag, similar to Captain America in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The seventh episode of Creature Commandos will be available on Max on 9th January 2025. If you haven't watched the series yet, you can catch it on the streaming service.
