Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 6, 'Excessive Force,' introduced a new character from the comics, actor Jeremy Earl's Cole North. Introduced in 2019, North is a more recent addition to the Marvel and Daredevil mythos. North is a unique character because he starts in a more antagonistic role, not because he is a corrupt cop but an honest one who sees Daredevil as a vigilante deserving of incarceration.
However, over time, North started seeing the flaws in the justice system he was a part of, so he quit the police force, became an ally to Daredevil, and joined The Man Without Fear's warrior clan The Fist for a while. Thus, when fans saw Detective Cole North in the sixth episode of Daredevil: Born Again, they wondered if the show would adapt the character as it unfolded in the pages of the comics.
For now, it is unknown if the team working on Born Again will adapt the storyline as fans read in the comics. But, given the show's reputation for adapting the comics, it won't be surprising, if it does happen that North becomes an ally to Matt Murdock in the future.
Who is Daredevil: Born Again's Cole North?
Cole North, as seen in Daredevil: Born Again, is a cop transferred to New York from Chicago. However, in the comics, he is more of an honest cop than the show suggests. In the show, Cole North is described as one of the "bad cops" who trusts Mayor Fisk and willingly joins the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. However, that is not who he is in the comics.
In the comics, Cole North shoots a 16-year-old boy whom he thought was reaching for a gun. But, turns out the boy was reaching out for his phone, and as a result, North is transferred to New York for the error. In New York, North came very close to arresting Daredevil, but the latter ultimately escaped with the help of Frank Castle/The Punisher.
It is after his interaction with Spider-Man that North begins to see the flaws in the system and quits the force out of disillusionment. After doing so, North allies himself with The Man Without Fear and even goes on to join the latter's warrior clan, The Fist, which counters the mysterious villainous organization The Hand.
After The Fist falls apart, Cole North and Foggy Nelson collaborate to establish a legal firm, Nelson North. In that firm, North works as the chief investigator. Thus, the Cole North readers met in the pages of Marvel Comics is a character who has a rich backstory and evolves slowly. This is a character with a lot of potential for a rich character arc in the show.
While it is currently unclear what role Cole will play in Daredevil: Born Again, other than being part of Fisk's Anti-Vigilante Task Force, Daredevil fans sincerely hope the series' writing team will adopt North's story from the comics.
