Cruel Intentions is a teen drama that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 21, 2024. Based on the 1999 film of the same name, which in turn was based on a 1782 novel, the series follows two rich step-siblings who attend an elite college.
After an incident threatens their position at the college, the two manipulative step-siblings, Lucien and Caroline go to any extent to maintain their social status. While doing so, they bet on seducing fellow student Annie Grover, the US Vice President’s daughter.
The Season 1 finale saw Caroline reveal Lucien's secret (his mother killed herself) to Annie and also stated that he was not worthy of love. In a fit of rage, Lucien slept with Caroline's mother and recorded the se*ual encounter.
Towards the end of the finale, Caroline received a new file on the shared drive that she has with Lucien. Turns out, Lucien himself shared the recording for Caroline to see. In shock, she calls Lucien, but he ignores all her advances as he smiles and continues to drive his car as Season 1 draws to a close.
The show adds a modern and steamy take to the original film while keeping its essence. However, it only features eight episodes, and fans can’t help but wonder if there will be a Cruel Intentions Season 2. As of now, the show has not been renewed for a second season.
The renewal status of Cruel Intentions season 2
Amazon Prime Video has not yet announced the renewal of Cruel Intentions for Season 2. The streamer will probably wait for a few days to analyze the viewership and response from the audience before deciding on the future of the series.
What does not work in the favor of the show is that it has received largely negative reviews from critics. However, there have been times when critically panned shows have earned massive viewership ratings, which led to their continuation.
If the show is able to find a decent following in the upcoming weeks, Prime Video might renew it for another season. From the story's point of view, the first installment ended on a cliffhanger, which does call for a second season. However, the final decision lies with Amazon Prime Video.
Meanwhile, series creators Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman are open to returning to the project for another season. In an interview with US Weekly, Goodman teased how the story can move forward in the next episodes and said:
“There are a lot of ways to go. And I think that these are two people who’ve behaved incredibly badly to each other. We’ll have to wait to see [in season 2] what the breaking points really are for them.”
If the show does get renewed in the next few days, Cruel Intentions season 2 will likely premiere in 2026. Season 1 was filmed in the summer of 2023 and released around one and a half years later in November 2024. Season 2 is also expected to follow the same trend, and hence, might premiere sometime in 2026.
Who will star in Cruel Intentions season 2?
If Cruel Intentions season 2 gets the green light, it is expected to mark the return of the majority of the main cast. Sarah Catherine Hook and Zac Burgess would reprise their roles as the evil step-siblings, Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, respectively.
Savannah Lee Smith would also return as Annie Grover. Other actors who could be seen in season 2 include John Harlan Kim as Blaise Powell, Sara Silva as CeCe Carroway, Brooke Lena Johnson as Beatrice Worth, Khobe Clarke as Scott Russell and Sean Patrick Thomas as Professor Chadwick.
What will be the plot of Cruel Intentions season 2?
The show is not entirely following the storyline of the 1999 film, so things could go in any direction in season 2. By the end of season 1, Lucien has proven that he is as wicked as his step-sister, as he slept with her mother and sent a recorded tape to her.
The second season could explore the rivalry between the siblings as they try to outsmart each other. Meanwhile, Annie has finally learned that she was being manipulated and might stand up for herself in a potential second season.
Elsewhere, CeCe is done with her best friend Caroline and could be a threat to her status in the college. Meanwhile, Scott and Blaise’s relationship could see some new twists as the couple have gone through a rough break up.
