Apple TV+’s Shrinking Season 2 had a surprise in store for the audience when Jason Segel as protagonist Jimmy Laird reunited with Cobie Smulders as Sofi. Smulders and Segel have been co-stars on How I Met Your Mother, and the actress was seen in an episode of the second season as Sofi.
There are instant sparks between Jimmy and Sofi, contrary to the friendly bond Segel and Smulders shared in the previous show, as Marshall and Robin respectively. On Shrinking, Smulders’ guest appearance as Sofi has made viewers nostalgic, and has played a key role in indicating that Jimmy might be ready to move forward.
The development has also left fans wondering whether the actress would return as Sofi in Shrinking Season 3. While Cobie Smulders’ involvement in the next season has not been confirmed, the actress and series co-creator Bill Lawrence have expressed their desire to bring Sofi back to the show.
Will Cobie Smulders return as Sofi in Shrinking Season 3?
As of now, Cobie Smulders’ return in Shrinking Season 3 has not been confirmed, because the official casting for the show has not been announced. However, there is a high possibility that the actress will reprise her role as Sofi, as series co-creator Bill Lawrence is eager to bring the character back in the new season.
In an interview with TVLine, Lawrence explained he wants to continue Sofi’s plot in the show because it signifies moving forward for Jimmy Laird. At the same time, he is keen to have Cobie Smulders’ onboard for Season 3. The co-creator said:
“I would kill to have Cobie back in the show. We always do Easter eggs for what the next season’s about in the season before. And so, Cobie’s character is kind of a personification, a visual representation of what moving forward looks like for Jason’s character.”
He added:
“I thought they were both so good in it that I’m gonna do everything I can to coerce her into coming back to the show.”
Meanwhile, Smulders also wishes to return to Shrinking as she had a great time playing Sofi in the second season. However, she added her possible appearance would depend on the new season's storyline. The actress said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter:
“Absolutely. I mean, it depends. I don’t know which direction they’re planning to go for next season. But I loved my time on the show, and I would happily work with Jason and the rest of the cast again. So yeah, I would love to. I have no idea what their plans are, though.”
WHile Smulders and Lawrence are both keen on having Sofi back in Shrinking Season 3, there is yet to be an official confirmation about the casting.
Cobie Smulders’ role in Shrinking
Cobie Smulders played Sofi, a divorced mother, in Shrinking Season 2 Episode 10, titled Changing Patterns. Jimmy meets Sofi when he goes to buy a yellow Mini Cooper for his daughter, Alice, as a birthday gift. The car is just like the one his late wife, Tia, used to drive.
During the meeting, Sofi and Jimmy connect over their painful pasts. Jimmy lost his wife and Sofi was betrayed by her ex-husband. Sofi surprises Jimmy by being open about her struggles.
Their conversation gives Jimmy a little push to finally think about dating again, after reeling from the loss of his wife. However, despite their chemistry, Jimmy does not ask Sofi out, as he is still figuring out how to move on.

If Cobie Smulders appears in the third season, Jimmy could finally get a shot at a romantic relationship with Sofi. Her character brings a potential romantic arc to the show, while also helping Jimmy reflect on his issues.
