When American Gods premiered on Starz in 2019, it received rave reviews for its gripping visuals and stellar performances. Based on Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel of the same name, the fantasy drama revolves around an ex-convict who finds himself in a magical world where the Old Gods are at war with the New Gods.

The show starred the likes of Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, and Emily Browning, all of whom impressed the audience with their captivating acts. At the same time, the show was also appreciated for its novel concept and faithfulness to the book.

The third season of the show was aired back in 2021, and ever since, fans have been awaiting updates on American Gods Season 4. Unfortunately, the show was canceled by Starz after three seasons. However, Neil Gaiman and Ricky Whittle have expressed their willingness to continue the story.

Will there be an American Gods Season 4?

In March 2021, Starz announced that it would not be moving ahead with American Gods Season 4. The dwindling viewership ratings and production issues were said to be the reason behind the cancellation.

While the show garnered good ratings in the debut season and even received two Emmy nominations, the viewership consistently dropped in the subsequent installments. The second and third seasons were panned by critics as well, contrary to the first chapter.

Moreover, American Gods struggled with production issues. After the first season, original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed the project and were replaced by Jesse Alexander, who also exited after the second season. Charles H. Eglee then came on board for the third installment before the show was ultimately canceled.

The constant change of executives resulted in frequent changes in the storyline, leading to an incoherent narrative, which was not liked by fans. A week after American Gods season 3 concluded airing, Starz announced the show’s cancellation.

How American Gods could still make a comeback

While it has been four years since the show was canceled, there is still a possibility of its comeback with a fourth season. Author Neil Gaiman, who served as an executive producer on the series, said the project ‘is definitely not dead’ shortly after the cancellation was announced.

In February 2024, Ricky Whittle, who played the lead Shadow Moon, also expressed his hope of continuing the show. The actor said he has been having discussions with Gaiman, and the two are pitching the show to other platforms:

“It is very much not dead. I’ve had discussions for about two, three years now with Neil Gaiman about taking it somewhere to finish it, to another streamer to finish the story. So there’s more story there for Shadow Moon to return. And it’s something that I’m very interested in.”
“He wants to finish that story because the end of the book is the best part. It’s such an incredible twist that it would be a crime for us not to finish it. So there’s definitely movement, and there’s definitely talks between myself and Neil Gaiman in bringing a team back to kind of finish the story.”

However, despite Neil and Ricky’s hopeful updates, a fourth season has not been officially announced as of now. Apart from Ricky Whittle, the show also stars Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Bruce Langley as the Technical Boy, and Yetide Badaki as Bilquis.
