After almost twelve years, fan-favorite wizards Justin and Alex are back! Disney premiered the first two episodes of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place on October 29, 2024, a fantastical reboot of the original series that ended in 2012.
This time with a fresh narrative and new faces, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place will follow a rebellious, independent 12-year-old Billie who knows nothing but magic. Unlike Justin, who has been living a magic-free life in the mortal world with his family.
While David Henrie is a regular cast member on Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, fans will see less of Selena Gomez's Alex. The globally-renowned singer is playing a recurring role and won't appear much in the sitcom.
However, it won't affect the comedic interactions between characters, and the iconic slapstick humor style of the series. As seen in the first episode, Justin and his family's lives are upended, thanks to his adorable sister Alex. Read more to explore Gomez's role in the premiere.
Exploring Selena Gomez's role in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place
As mentioned above, the reboot is taking place twelve years after Wizards of the Waverly Place ended, bringing back Justin Russo and his sister Alex Russo as adult wizards. However, this time the story isn't about the kids under training to get the family's magic wand, but will focus on a new character named Billie.
As seen in the premiere, Justin is excited for his 34th birthday, and set to enjoy his big day. But before that happens, Alex appears at his home with Alex saying "Surprise"! That was undeniably a hilarious surprise for Justin as he says "No freakin' way!"
What's even more comedic is that Gomez's Alex forgot her big brother's birthday, but thankfully crashed at his house because Billie needs a mentor and it cannot be anyone else but Justin. Alex explained to her brother about Billie, and now Justin must dust off his magical abilities to help young Billie master her powers.
The Russos always have each other's back as Justin agreed to train Billie and Alex returned to the tribunal. This way, Gomez's role in the premiere ended, and who knows if Alex would give another surprise in future episodes.
Selena Gomez and David Henrie talk about Wizards Beyond Waverly Place
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is undoubtedly a "love letter" to longtime fans, as it not only brought back the most adored character Justin Russo but also gave a magical nostalgic feeling with a fresh story.
David Henrie and Selena Gomez played teenage Russo siblings in the original series, and now playing adult wizards, with Justin being a 34-year-old and Alex being 32.
The two actors shared their thoughts on reprising their roles in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place during its premiere in Hollywood. Per ABC, Gomez stated:
"I was able to go back into Alex a little too quickly... Alex is a fierce character. She's a rule breaker... I'm proud to bring that back."
Henrie also expressed his excitement and explained that Justin is set to pass down the wand to a new generation. While the actors are back in their roles, other cast members include Mimi Gianopulos, Max Matenko, Alkaio Thiele, Maria Canals-Barrera, David DeLuise, Taylor Cora, and Jake T. Austin.
New episodes will air on the Disney channel every Tuesday, followed by Disney+ releasing them a day after. So, if you missed the first two episodes, make sure to watch them today on the streamer.
