Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias is set in the fictional town of Serenity, where three childhood best friends, Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen, deal with the challenges of their lives with the support of each other.

One of these challenges comes in the form of Trent Lewis, the mayor of the town. During the first three seasons of the show, Trent and his wife, Mary Vaughn Lewis, serve as major antagonists in the storyline as they misuse their power.

However, things change in Sweet Magnolias season 3 when Trent suddenly resigns from his office. The mayor decides to step down to dodge a recall vote, as Peggy Martin finds out he has been embezzling the town’s funds for his personal use.

Why does Trent Lewis resign as Serenity’s mayor in Sweet Magnolias?

Though Trent Lewis’ resignation comes as a surprise, the seeds for the plot were already sown in Sweet Magnolias season 2. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen have a constant tussle with the mayor and his wife during the first three seasons.

The trio feels that Trent is not doing enough for the town, and there is dissatisfaction among the citizens over his method of working. While the townspeople continue to face issues in their everyday lives and jobs, the mayor fails to take responsibility for Serenity’s growth and prosperity.

Meanwhile, Mary Vaughn comes up with a rule that disrupts car parking outside small businesses in the town, including The Corner Spa, which is owned by the lead trio. Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen then investigate to figure out what exactly is going on.

They find out the Lewis family has bought land and are willing to sell it as a parking space. Realizing that the mayor and his family are using their position for immoral deeds, the three best friends decide to campaign against Lewis and ask for a recall vote.

Their campaign gains momentum over time; however, their plan hits a roadblock at the end of Sweet Magnolias season 2. To divert the public’s attention, Mary Vaughn exposes that Maddie’s boyfriend, Cal Maddox, has been arrested over assault charges.

In Sweet Magnolias season 3, as the date for the recall vote draws near, Peggy Martin takes it upon herself to dig into the dark secrets of the Lewis family. She eventually uncovers that Trent was committing financial misconduct. He was living off the town’s funds and using them for his own benefit.

As Trent gets to know that Peggy has evidence against him, he decides to resign from his office. By stepping down from the mayor’s position, Trent tries to protect his public image ahead of the recall vote.

He knows if he continues in the office, he will be exposed and will have to face public disgrace. At the same time, by resigning, he avoids going to prison. Trent’s resignation marks an end to his corrupt governance in the town, and Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen finally have a sigh of relief.

Meanwhile, the incident also causes a political shift in Serenity. With the mayor’s chair empty, Peggy rises through the ranks and replaces Trent in Sweet Magnolias season 4.

Considering her experience as the owner of The Centinel of Serenity newspaper, Peggy is well aware of the issues faced by people, and hence, seems like the perfect choice to lead the town.

Sweet Magnolias seasons 1 to 4 are streaming on Netflix.
