The latest offering from Taylor Sheridan, Landman, premiered the last episode of its first season on January 11, 2025. With an explosive finale, to say the least, and brought resolution to certain storylines, the show also ensured that it answered the questions regarding Tommy (played by Billy Bob Thornton) sharing his house with two people in Landman.

In Landman, it was shown that Tommy Norris shared his space with Nathan (played by Colm Feore) and Dale Bradley(played by James Jordan). The two very different people, one a lawyer for the oil company, and another a worker, created a strange dynamic at Tommy’s home, which added dramatic value to Landman.

However, regardless of the kind of drama Tommy’s living situation induced, it was natural for the viewers to question why it was happening in the first place.

Let us now explore the reason behind Tommy having to share his house with two other people in Landman.

Tommy shares his house with other people in Landman because of monetary concerns

While Landman gave the initial impression of Tommy being a rich guy, it is eventually revealed that he was $500,000 in debt. This puts him in a starkly contrasting position from Monty Miller (played by Jon Hamm), who is shown to be genuinely rich.

It is in Landman Season 1 Episode 4 that Tommy’s financial struggles are revealed through a conversation with Rebecca (played by Kayla Wallace) and Angela (played by Ali Larter). It is then explained that Tommy suffered a huge financial loss due to an oil bust, post which the show takes place.

The bust not only affected him financially but also caused his marriage to fall apart. Tommy’s financial situation offers the perfect and logical explanation behind sharing his space with two other people as that is the best solution that the company can come up with while keeping everyone’s interests in mind.

Tommy’s sharing his house adds dramatic value to Landman

Besides the logical explanation of Tommy’s living situation, the addition of those two completely different characters to Tommy’s space also adds a dramatic layer to the narrative especially when they encounter Tommy’s ex-wife, Angela, and teenage daughter, Ainsley (played by Michelle Randolph).

While the public reception of the dynamic shown between Nathan and Ainsley has been rather diverse, especially in cases where Nathan gawks at Ainsley, who is a minor, there is no denying the fact that their encounters bring forth interesting narrative points.

It is always great to see diverse characters on screen and how they get along with each other in a space as close as a house. Sheridan does this wonderfully in Landman and while keeping the reasoning of the show alive, successfully adds significant drama to it that goes beyond all the nitty gritty of the oil business that the show is about.

Landman season 1 can be streamed on Paramount+.
