Why was The Resident canceled?
The Resident's viewership of season 6 dropped by 69% among the targeted demographic age group of 18-49 years, as compared to season 1. The show follows Dr. Conard Hawkins, a senior resident, and Dr. Devon Pravesh, a younger doctor working under Conard's guidance.
After season 6, the show's multiplatform audience decreased by 35 %, keeping season 1 as a base and 12% just after the previous season. The rating dropped by 0.5, with 6.9 million viewers across platforms. Clearly, the audience is rejecting The Resident, and it wouldn't have been profitable anymore to drag it any longer. Therefore, 20th Television and FOX decided to discontinue the show.
Fox also launched another medical drama, "Doc," in January 2025, co-produced by Sony Pictures and FOX.

In 2022, according to a report by Hollywood Reporter, the creator of the show Amy Holden said in an interview that they are hopeful that the show will pick up.
