The game is far from over, and this time, the stakes are higher than ever in Squid Game Season 2, arriving in a few days on Netflix. The survival thriller introduced viewers to a world where life and death hang in the balance, and every choice could be the last.
The first season had nine episodes, each focusing on deadly tasks and eliminating players. However, fans won’t get the same number of episodes in Squid Game Season 2, as it will have only seven episodes.
The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, explained that the reason behind the shortened number of episodes in Squid Game Season 2 is a major cliffhanger in episode seven. Dong-hyuk was writing Seasons 2 and 3 at the same time and felt that ending the upcoming season with just seven episodes would do justice to the narrative.

Squid Game Season 2 will have only seven episodes
Following the remarkable success of Squid Games Season 1, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is all set for its next chapter, and this time, with more thrill and twists. The upcoming season will bring back Player 456: Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the leader known as Front-Man (Lee Byung-hun); Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-jun); and Recruiter (Gong Yoo).
Dong-hyuk was inspired by the financial crisis in South Korea while crafting the survival thriller, and the times evolved when the world faced a global pandemic. What influenced the second and third seasons most are the political divisions, societal inequalities, and class struggles that viewers will be able to resonate with.
The upcoming season will delve into the human ability to adapt to change, especially after the pandemic and in a world filled with greed and power struggles. Regarding the shortened Season 2, the creator explained that the world has changed a lot since Squid Game Season 1, and there have been other factors.

During his interview with Deadline, Hwang Dong-hyuk said:
"When I was writing the script for the two seasons, I felt like there was a big turning point or an inflection point, and that was the end of episode seven."
He continued:
"So I thought that it would do it justice to have a separate season after that. That’s why I had first seven episodes as Season 2 and then the rest of Season 3."
The seven-episode arc of Squid Game Season 2 is designed to reach a critical turning point at the end of Episode 7 and set the stage for the final chapter. The split allowed the creator to make a more impactful story while ensuring to bring back the core themes.
Additionally, in Season 2, the focus will shift to the guards, called soldiers and managers. They are the people wearing masks with shapes like triangles or squares, and the second chapter will delve into the background, exploring how they ended up as guards in the deadly game.
