Why did Spencer blame Whitfield for Alex's tragic fate in 1923 Season 2 finale? Actor Brandon Sklenar opens up about a cut dialogue

The fans of Paramount Plus’ 1923 were left shocked when Alex (played by Julia Schlaepfer) met her tragic fate at the end of the Season 2 finale. Alex and Spencer Dutton (played by Brandon Sklenar) finally reunited at the end of the season, only to be torn apart. Spencer blames Alex's death on Donald Whitfield (played by Timothy Dalton), a shrewd businessman who wants to acquire the Dutton family ranch, Yellowstone.

While talking about the shocking finale, Brandon Sklenar implied that there was a dialogue, which would have added some context to his reason to blame Whitfield for Alex’s death. While speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said:

“There was a bit of dialogue that I had in that (confrontation) scene, but we cut it out. Spencer was incredibly emotional during that bit of dialogue, and we had already had this emotional moment with Alex. So it just felt like the balance would’ve been off, and they felt it was more effective to go right to the point with Whitfield. They felt that people would feel that and understand why without having to spell it out.”

He continued,

“But initially, there was a bit of dialogue where Spencer essentially said the same thing: “You came after my family, and that forced me home.” He went through the chain of events as far as why he feels that Whitfield is responsible.”

He further added:

“So I think the fans of the show can understand why it’s Whitfield, without us fully explaining it, as you have. None of this would have happened had Whitfield not come after the Dutton family. Alex would not have followed Spencer home, and she would not have gotten stranded in the snow. His family also wouldn’t be in the position they’re in, and Spencer wouldn’t be on this war path where he’s now standing there with a gun at Whitfield’s head. So it is his fault.”

What happened in the 1923 Season 2 finale?

Spencer and Alex had been separated for a major part of the season. Alex sets out looking for her husband as she braves through several hardships, including the freezing cold.

Donald Whitfield, a cunning businessman, wanted to acquire the Dutton family ranch to turn it into a ski lodge. He gets into a battle with the family to take over the land.

Meanwhile, Spencer meets Alex near the Montana train tracks. Alex is pregnant and has severe frostbite. But Spencer leaves her with Jacob (played by Harrison Ford) to go defend the family ranch from Whitfield. Meanwhile, Alex goes to the hospital and is forced to confront the hard decision to amputate her limbs that are affected by the frostbite. But she refuses to do so. She finally gives birth to their son and dies with Spencer next to her.

Spencer, who loved his wife deeply, is filled with vengeance. He blames Whitfield for her death and shoots him dead in his mansion.
