The fall finale of Chicago Fire Season 13 premiered on November 13, 2024 and the absence of Severide (Taylor Kinney) left fans surprised and worried. However, this seems to be only for one episode as the show did end up explaining where he was for episode 8.

Since beginning his investigations with arson cases, Severide sometimes needed to be away from Firehouse 51 in order to continue working on those cases and continue improving his skills in order to crack them.

While he does move away from Firehouse 51 for some time, his absence does not last long. Let us now explore in detail why Severide was missing in Chicago Fire Season 13 fall finale and if/when he will be coming back.

Where was Severide in Chicago Fire Season 13 finale?

Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 8, titled Quicksand, did not take long to explain Severide’s absence. Capp (Randy Flagler) and Tony (Anthony Ferraris) noted that while Severide was away, Cruz had to be the shift’s acting lieutenant. The fact that Cruz was only the acting Lieutenant made it clear that this is a temporary situation and Severide will be back.

It is then revealed by Cruz that Severide is in Michigan for a work trip:

"Severide's got some fire inspection boondoggle in Michigan."

Since Severide is delving more and more into the world of arson, it only makes sense that he is trying to get better at investigating those types of cases. This explains why he would have to deal with situations that are outside Firehouse 51.

As Cruz is already an Acting Lieutenant in Severide's absence, it would make sense if the show ever makes him take the Lieutenant’s exam and stay on the team of Firehouse 51. It would also help Severide to go on with his arson training and cases and yet be a regular part of the series.

When will Severide be back in Chicago Fire?

This is not the first time Severide’s character has been absent from the show. Last time when he was away, his absence stretched for a prolonged period as Taylor Kinney, the actor playing Severide, took a leave from work.

However, that was addressed later, when Severide’s wife, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) told him that she did not like him disappearing while being away for work.

He seems to have learnt his lesson from that as this time, he has been in touch with his kids while being away. He also mentioned that he was not enjoying this work trip very much and would be back early.

When Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) asks Stella about how Severide is doing in Michigan, she tells her,

“Good. But he's decided to come back a little early, which, of course, I'm happy about."

This means that Severide will mostly be back for the winter premiere of Chicago Fire Season 13. Though the season is more than a month and half away, fans can at least rejoice that the next time they switch on the show, their beloved character, Severide is likely to appear.

Chicago Fire can be streamed on Peacock.
