The medical drama, Chicago Med on NBC, has had several characters over its 10 seasons who have become an integral part of the show’s history. One of the more unforgettable characters on the show is Dr. Sarah Reese, portrayed by Rachel DiPillo. Chicago Med revolves around the medical professionals in the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, who navigate through challenges at work while dealing with personal issues. Dipillo played the role of the psychiatry resident at the hospital from Season 1 to 3, bidding the show farewell in Season 4.
A fan favorite, Dr. Reese frequently came across as vulnerable, but she was determined to build her career. While professionally she continued to perform well, personally she had a turbulent relationship with her father. Her mentor-mentee relationship with Dr. Daniel Charles (played by Oliver Platt) was one of the highlights of the show. DiPillo reprised her role as Dr. Reese in Season 10 as a guest.
Who is Dr. Sarah Reese on Chicago Med?
Dr. Sarah Reese joins the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center as a fourth-year medical student. As her mentor, Dr. Daniel Charles was instrumental in seeing Dr. Reese’s potential, as she was still trying to learn the ropes at work. She would often look at him as a father figure and not just as a colleague. She crosses several hurdles as she becomes a first-year psychiatry resident.
In her personal life, Dr. Reese was raised by her mother after her father abandoned her when she was a child. She meets her father after 20 years. She learns in Season 3 that her father is a psychopath who has committed serious crimes. When he needs a heart transplant, she begins to take care of him. But Dr. Charles knew that her father was a serial killer responsible for the murder of several women and confronts him. He hesitates to resuscitate her father when he has a heart attack. This is witnessed by Dr. Reese.
In episode 1 of Season 4, titled Be My Better Half, Dr. Reese has a moment of clarity. She realizes that her relationship with Dr. Charles has been gravely affected by the incident, and thus, her future in the hospital becomes uncertain. She reasons that she did not want to work with a doctor who was ready to let a patient die because of his crime. She decided to leave the hospital and start afresh at Baylor University.
In Season 10, episode 8, titled 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', Dr. Reese comes back to Chicago Med when a patient of hers is brought for overdose. She reveals to Dr. Charles that the patient was having a panic attack and did not overdose. The two get into an intense argument over medical ethics.
Why did Rachel DiPillo leave Chicago Med in Season 4?
Neither the actress nor the makers of Chicago Med shared the real reason for her initial departure from the show. She has also appeared in other One Chicago franchise shows, Chicago PD and Chicago Fire. While she did appear in Season 10 of Chicago Med as a guest star, it remains to be seen if we will get to see more of Dr. Reese in the future.
