Netflix’s American Primeval has impressed the audience with its raw and gory take on the Western genre. The show is set in 1857 and follows the birth of the American West, where different cults, religions, tribes, and communities get into a violent struggle to own the land.
Amid the chaos, a woman named Sara Rowell becomes a fugitive after killing an abusive man and moves through the battle frontier with her son, Devin. Throughout the season, Sara wishes to make it to Crook Springs to reunite Devin with his father, who can protect him.
However, when she finally gets the opportunity at the end of American Primeval, she takes Devin to California instead of Crook Springs. Sara realizes her inner strength after bracing through the challenges of the war and finally knows she can take care of her son; hence, she moves with him to California for a fresh start.
Sara takes Devin to California for a fresh start in American Primeval
Sara decides to take Devin to California in American Primeval because her plans and priorities change during her journey. At first, she intends to bring Devin to his father, Beckworth, in Crook Springs as she believes it to be the best way to keep him safe since bounty hunters threatened their safety.
As they travel through the frontier, Sara starts to think differently. In the show's very first episode, Devin mentions his dream of going to California. Initially, his mother does not take it seriously but reconsiders it after her traumatic yet empowering experiences on the road.
As the mother and son duo face betrayal, loss, and bloodshed in the frontier, their bond grows even stronger. Sara begins to realize that Devin might not be safe with his father after all.
Isaac’s death further makes her understand how much she needs Devin. Hence, she begins to think California could be a new beginning for her and her son, away from all the violence and fights. It is a place where Sara and Devin can start over and build a better life together.
Isaac helps Sara realize her strength in American Primeval
Isaac plays an important role in Sara’s growth and her eventual decision to take Devin to California. The fugitive initially depends on him for her survival and protection. Unlike others in her life, Isaac does not let her manipulate him to get what she wants.
Instead, he forces her to face her weaknesses and grow stronger over time. Isaac teaches her how to stand on her own without anyone’s support. His bravery and determination inspire her. Through every danger they face, from bounty hunters to brutal weather, Sara is motivated by Isaac’s personality and becomes more independent.
When Isaac sacrifices himself to save her in the American Primeval finale episode, Sara finally believes she can take care of her son on her own, and does not need to leave him with his father.
In an interview with Tudum, series director Peter Berg also highlighted how Isaac brings a change in Sara’s personality and makes her realize her strength:
“It’s almost like he’s a physical embodiment of something that Sara has felt inside for her whole life. She’s just never been allowed to embody it. I thought about charting the inner Isaac coming out.”
“Sara always knew she was strong, but now she’s got an added ability to her strength. ‘I can survive. I am going to be responsible for my son and for this young girl. And we’re going to figure this sh** out.’”
