When it was first released back in February 2022, Reacher season 1 met with wholehearted audience approval. The first installment of Reacher quickly became one of the most-watched English language shows across the globe on Amazon Prime Video and was also able to secure a Rotten Tomatoes Critics' score of 95%. However, contrary to the expectations generated by the celebrated debut season, the second season of Reacher somewhat fell flat and underperformed.
While the first season of Amazon Prime Video's Reacher was based on the book, Killing Floor, by Lee Child, the second season chose to adapt the eleventh book in the franchise called Bad Luck and Trouble. Most of the things that made the debut season a hit, including engaging character development, memorable supporting characters, an isolated small-town setting, etc. were missing in the second installment.

Reacher season 2 underperformance reasons explored
The first season of Reacher on Amazon Prime Video presented the protagonist as a solitary figure, much like a Samurai and a drifter fused into one. The former Military Officer was portrayed as someone who is constantly on the move and kept getting involved in trouble repetitively. He lives life on his terms and is fiercely protective of his freedom and empathetic to the well-being of those around him.
As in the literary franchise, the first season didn't bring to screen an assistant for Jack Reacher. The characters of Roscoe and Finlay, brilliant in their rights, were more supporting, which allowed the protagonist to reach his full potential. The action sequences too were one of a kind, being perfectly choreographed to highlight the edgy, and raw nature of Reacher's muscular prowess.
In the second season, the action was set in a big city with pronounced huge stakes. These sequences came across as over-the-top orchestrations as the protagonist emerged as a superhuman entity. Moreover, the showrunners decided to include several important characters, including David O'Donnell, Frances Neagley, and Karla Dixon playing the key characters.
The presence of these characters was an undoing of the narrative as it caused saturation, and overshadowed the titular character himself. In short, the second season fell flat in its attempt to meet the standard set by the debut season.
Reacher season 3 to be released next year
Following the debacle that the second season was, the makers of the show decided to go back to a more rooted setting for the third season, scheduled for a February 2025 release. It is expected that the upcoming season will be once again set in a small town and is based on the seventh book in the franchise, called Persuader. This would once again be a solo adventure for the protagonist, and delve more into a plot of a personal revenge crusade for him.
Reacher season 3 is scheduled to be released on February 20, 2025, on Amazon Prime Video.
