Primarily centered around Sheldon Cooper's character, The Big Bang Theory prequel was able to feature various guest characters including Mckenna Grace's character Paige, but the character was deemed missing from the finale of Young Sheldon. This became the reason behind the frustration for a lot of Young Sheldon viewers.

Paige is Sheldon's fellow prodigy who suffers a bad time in life and decides to take a darker path in life. The absence of the character from Young Sheldn's finale left the character's arc incomplete.

Steve Holland, executive producer of the show reveals the reason behind Paige's absence.

Grace's busy schedule during production of Young Sheldon's finale

In an interview, Holland revealed that the showrunner believed that the character's story didn't need anything more. However, they wanted to have her in the finale but Grace was too busy during the production of Young Sheldon's finale.

Paige was last seen in Season 6 episode 16, when Missy ran away from George and Mary in order to rebel. She was part of a handful of episodes but had an engaging storyline. Paige's introduction was intriguing and also suggested that Sheldon's feeling of being a misfit in society is not entirely true. Paige was potentially better than the boy's genius and was also well-adjusted in society. The split of her parents shook her and changed her life altogether as she blamed herself for it.

"When we got into this season, especially with it being a shortened season, we never thought that [Paige’s storyline] was an arc that needed more closing than it got. There was a parallel; she was a bit of a mirror image of Sheldon — a different way that Sheldon could have turned out — and I think we saw that play out." added Steve Holland.

Makers didn't think Paige's story needed any closure in Young Sheldon

The makers concluded that Paige's character didn't require closure as it was made to reflect how Sheldon could have turned out differently.

However, the character Paige's fate has been the most unresolved in the series. She was not among the primary cast of the show but her increasing popularity should have urged the makers to at least give her a send-off. Even with the unavailability of Grace during the shoot, the series would have offered some information about the character to update the viewers.

The shortened Young Sheldon final season also made it difficult to do justice to the character and wrap up every single plot line in the show sincerely. The finale marked the end of the series and confirmed Georgie and Mandy's spin-off. Steve Holland also said that the ending of Young Sheldon with Season 7 makes sense with relevant to the time that is portrayed in The Big Bang theory.
