Max Minghella's Nick Blaine is a complicated character in Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale. Being promoted to Gilead's Commander in Season 5, he does not believe the regressive laws of his country.
His position in Gilead also complicates his relationship with June Osborne, who has been subjugated and forced to become s*x workers to powerful men in Gilead.
However, since Nick has an undying love for June, he helps her gain freedom, jeopardising his life in his country. But the Season 5 finale saw an uncertain fate for the character after he was put behind bars.
After Nick learns that June was nearly killed in an operation launched by Commander Lawrence, he punches him at his wedding. This violent action gets him arrested, and he is put behind bars.

Why was Nick Blaine put behind bars in The Handmaid's Tale?
While fans are eager to know June and her daughter Hannah's fate in the final season of The Handmaid's Tale, June's lover Nick Blaine's fate was also in danger in the Season 5 finale.
Throughout the dystopian thriller, Nick faces a conflict within himself as he is both Gilead's commander and June's lover. While he secretly helps June earn her freedom from Gilead, he is outed in the Season 5 finale because of his actions.
Throughout Season 5, Nick continued to climb up the ranks in Gilead despite despising its laws because he knew this was his only way to survive and help June from the inside. While he was under the scrutiny of many Gileadeans, he managed to support June.
But when he finally learns that Gilead has launched a secretive operation called the Eyes, launched by Commander Lawrence, to find and kill June, he is furious. Eventually, the Eyes is successful, and June is nearly killed in the operation, which prompts Nick to take a drastic step, which eventually puts him behind bars.
After he saw June's condition in the hospital, he could not control himself and angrily went to Commander Lawrence's wedding, where he punched him. Suspecting his involvement with June and his violent action towards the Commander, Nick is put behind bars.
Nick Blaine was reunited with June in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6
While Nick Blaine's story was left on a cliffhanger in Season 5, we learn that his prison sentence was short-lived because of his father-in-law, High Commander Wharton. In the Season 6 premiere, Nick is finally out of jail and decides to restart his life with his wife, Rose, who is also pregnant with his child.
While Nick still loves June, he decides to let her go and also cut off all ties with Mark and his spying mission with the US Government.
But in a twist of fate, Nick is reunited with June in The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 Episode 3, when she asks for help locating Luke and Moira. Nick's loyalties are tested again, but he cannot help himself, so he finds Luke and Moira for June.
When the two parted again, it is hinted that their paths will cross again, and it would be interesting to see what Nick eventually chooses.
