Cobra Kai is all set to wrap up in February 2025 after six exhilarating seasons. The show serves as a spin-off to The Karate Kid film series, bringing back some iconic characters from the martial arts franchise.
Despite being a spin-off, Cobra Kai has made its place in the audience’s hearts and has consistently garnered a massive number of views on Netflix. This makes one wonder why Netflix chose to end the series with season 6.
Well, the action comedy-drama has not been canceled by Netflix. Instead, it was the creators’ decision to end the show after the sixth season, as the storyline is headed toward a natural conclusion.
Cobra Kai creators decided to end the show after six seasons
It was a creative choice to culminate the story of Cobra Kai in six seasons. Co-creator and co-showrunner Josh Heald has confirmed that the team had an idea about when and how they would like to conclude the show from the very beginning. He said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight:
“We did always know how the show was going to end to a degree. For the bigger characters, we did know how it was going to end. We never could have predicted just how many characters we would acquire along the way who deserve their own bombastic endings as well.”
In another interview, co-creators Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz revealed that they were sure about ending the show once they finished production of the fifth season. Schlossberg told Screen Rant:
“We knew in season five that we were in endgame times. It wasn’t until after we shot season five that we kind of worked out exactly, Okay, this is going to be the end afterwards.”
Hence, considering the overall plot of the show, the creators felt that season 6 should be the last one, where all the character arcs and plot points could reach a satisfying conclusion.
Actor Ralph Macchio, who plays Daniel LaRusso, also expressed his contentment with the show, highlighting that stretching the story or overstaying their welcome would have had a negative impact on the series.
Cobra Kai will end with season 6 part 3
Cobra Kai season 6 part 3 will mark the final five episodes of the show, scheduled to be released on Netflix on February 13, 2025. While all the previous installments comprised 10 episodes, the final season features 15 episodes, split over three parts.
Discussing why they needed the additional number of episodes in Cobra Kai season 6, Josh Heald revealed the team required more than one season to finish the storyline.
However, doing two seasons would have led to unnecessary filler episodes. Hence, they chose to settle with 15 episodes. Heald told The Hollywood Reporter:
"We wanted to bring it in for a landing, but we needed more than one season and probably less than two seasons. We ended up with a nice round number of 15.”
While the show might be ending, the Karate Kid universe is not going anywhere. The next film in the franchise, Karate Kid: Legends, is already in the works with Ralph Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso, accompanied by Jackie Chan as Mr. Han.
Meanwhile, Cobra Kai creators are also open to creating spin-offs of the show. In an interview, Hayden Schlossberg confirmed the team is considering continuing the story of some of the characters from the series. The potential spin-offs could delve into the future or past of the dojo members.
Cobra Kai season 6 part 3 premieres on Netflix on February 13, 2025.
