Fans of Netflix's The Order were disappointed after the streaming giant canceled the show after it ran for just two seasons, joining a couple of more shows that Netflix dropped in recent years due to various reasons.
The horror show that centered on witches and werewolves earned considerable appreciation among fans and viewers who expressed disappointment at the show's termination. The show's producer had even shared his thoughts on being hopeful about the show's third season as he told Comic Con,
"The fan and the audience response has been incredible. We're really thankful to everybody out there for watching. The love comes through in all the blogs and the reviews and everything else. So we're cautiously optimistic, and we hope that we can have some good news soon."
But then shortly after, it was revealed that the show had been shelved, with reasons behind it not being public to the audience. Showrunner Dennis Heaton opened up about it on X, then Twitter and said,
"Unfortunately, we aren't returning, but I will always cherish the memories and the props I stole. Thank you all for watching."
Not just that. Heaton also let fans in on what plans he had for the third season as he added,
"PS – Jack was totally going to raise Alyssa from the dead, but she was going to come back wrong. Like, Pet Sematary wrong. Probably possessed by Zecchia. And a whole bunch of other corpses were coming back with her."
His statement just went on to show how forward things were looking before Netflix dropped the ball on its future. However, the reasons surrounding the show's cancellation are anything but extraordinary as it joins more shows the streaming giant previously hosted that had promising futures. The Order fared fine in terms of viewership and audience engagement. Why then, was it canceled?
Reasons why Netflix canceled The Order
Although Netflix has not made any public comments on the show's cancellation, viewers have seen it as a decision that came up at the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic that saw the departure of a good number of shows including Atypical, Bonding, Spinning Out, Dash and Lily and I Am Not Okay With This.
Production costs for The Order were high, considering its premise and plot, which likely did not match the viewership it got. It's less likely for Netflix to generally produce third seasons of shows, unless it goes on to become insanely popular and culturally in-demand. Although The Order performed well, it did not exactly result in mind-blowing numbers, something that certainly counts as one of the reasons why the streaming site might not have seen a future to it.
Because of the pandemic's weight, the cast also most likely faced conflicts in terms of scheduling, and several projects were terminated because of a number of reasons concerning the scene. As a result, The Order did not pass through all the obstacles it faced, and ended with the second season, leaving a lot of its characters hanging.
Both the seasons of The Order are available to stream on Netflix.
