It is interesting to note that the crime drama show, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan is an anthology because it has a different storyline in every season.

Season 1 focused on the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and was so exceptional that Netflix decided to have two more seasons. Season two centers around the murder committed by the Menendez Brothers: Lyle and Erik Menendez because of what the Menendez Brothers' parents do to them.

On August 20, 1989, Lyle and Erik Menéndez shot and killed their parents, José and Kitty, in their Beverly Hills mansion. The brothers used shotguns, firing multiple times. After committing the murder, the brothers stayed back and rather than leaving and letting someone find the bodies, they called 911.

Once the cops arrived at the crime scene, the brothers Lyle and Erik explained that they had gone out and had come back home and found the dead bodies of José and Kitty.

Initially, the police believed their statement and started viewing other suspects. But the police soon began to suspect the brothers in the following months looking into the spending they had been making from their parent's fortune.

The case of the Menendez brothers was the play for media attention in Netflix's Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, as the Menendez Brothers explained on what their parents did to them.

They accused their father of years-long sexual and physical abuse. They also claimed their mother had closed her eyes to such abuse. This encouraged her husband to victimize them even more.

Lyle and Erik Menéndez were arrested in March 1990 but it took years to be sentenced. They had to undergo two separate trials after the first was a flop. In 1993, their brothers, Lyle and Erik were tried together by respective juries.

But, if the brothers were found to have committed first-degree murder, they could have faced the death penalty. After weeks of deliberation, the juries could not come to a consensus on whether Lyle and Erik were guilty of murder or manslaughter. Later the judge ruled it as mistrial.

The second trial started in October 1995. This time, there was a single jury. The trial was successful, as the Menéndez brothers were found guilty of first-degree murder.

However, they were not given death penalty as would have been if the trial had succeeded. Instead, they were sentenced to life in prison with no chance of ever getting out.
