Marlene Lawston left Blue Bloods after episode 1 to pursue her education while a new actor Sami Gayle was recast in the role. Sami seemed a different version of the character, as she was a bit older than Marlene. After testing Marlene in the first episode, the producers somewhat wanted a more mature version.

Marlene left the show to pursue a medical scientist training program and was determined to make her career in the medical field. She made her acting debut in 2003 with an episode of Blue Clues. Nicky Reagan is a prominent member of the Reagan family, and her character contributes significantly to the central narrative of the drama.

Nicky Reagan's character arc in Blue Bloods explored

Nicky Reagan is the only child of Erin Reagan and Jack Boyle. She is raised by her mother as her father never wanted her custody. Mature-looking Nicky is often intelligently dressed and is the only female grandchild of Frank Reagan.

She often challenges her family's rights and law enforcement views and stands up for justice. Her raw nature often leads to her clashing with authority figures. She decided to study at Columbia University as she has a friend with an apartment close to the campus that she could share and save money.

Early in her teens, she announced her wish to be the first female Reagan police officer but later she swayed away from this conviction several times. In Season 6, Nicky is 19 years old when Thomas Wilder kidnaps her followed by which she admits to Frank that she is planning to take the police exams. In Season 8 she graduates from the University.

The character arc of Nicky through the episodes shifts from being a more idealistic teenager to a more thoughtful and independent one. She is often seen questioning the status quo, and this has allowed the series to pose moral and ethical dilemmas in law enforcement in Blue Bloods

The pilot episode was Marlene's last acting role, as she chose to live a normal life away from the spotlight. The series is available to stream on Paramount+ and several other online streaming platforms. However, recently, CBS canceled the show after a glorious run of 14 seasons because it wanted to focus on non-scripted programming.
