Severance season two recently premiered to positive reviews and promises a strong tour-de-force throughout its upcoming ten-episode run. The second season of Severance once again brings back everything that makes the Apple TV+ workplace thriller interesting - the bizarre setting, the conflict between the Innies and the Outies, and the scheming Lumon management.
One of the questions that comes to mind after watching the first episode of Severance season is the absence of Ms. Casey and the Wellness Room.
The reason behind Ms. Casey's absence can be explained by the fact that she was "retired" and taken to Lumon's testing floor at the end of Severance season 1. While she and the Wellness Room remain missing on Severance Season 2, it might be surmised that Lumon now has no use for Ms. Casey and that is the reason why they decided to "retire" her and take her to the testing floor.
As for why the Wellness Room is missing, it could be because Lumon has come up with alternatives (like the family visitation center) to keep their employees "happy".
It is a known fact that throughout the entirety of Severance season one, Harmony Cobel unsuccessfully tried his experiments on Ms. Casey and Mark to see if they would recognize each other. However, all experiments failed and turned up inconclusive results as the two couldn't recognize each other despite their outies being married in the outside world. Here's everything that we know.
What does the absence of Ms. Casey and the Wellness Centre from Severance season 2 mean?
The character of Ms. Casey has been an interesting one as she is the only part-time severed employee working for Lumon. Her previous job role involved counseling the other employees at the Wellness Centre and being the subject of Harmony Cobel's experiments. However, with the Wellness Centre now out of the picture, Lumon has devised several other ways to keep their employees happily occupied.
Instead of the previous counseling, the Innies now have a family visitation center, the idea of hall passes, and even a new Break-Room. Several other incentives are also doled out by the Macrodata Refinement Department.
As for the fate of Gemma/Ms. Casey, it is momentarily revealed that she is alive and is being kept against her will by Lumon as the footage making the claim evident briefly appears on Mark's computer.
What did the showrunner say about Severance season 2?
Severance creator Dan Erickson spoke in an exclusive interview with Deadline where he opened up about the Apple TV+ show's second season. Regarding the reunion of the characters Dylan, Mark, Irving, and Helly, Erickson remarked:
"I mean, at the end of the day, they’re the heart and soul of the show. We did talk at one point about drawing that out a little bit more, and it was tempting, I remember the day that we shot the first scene with Stefano and Bob and Alia, we were like, “Oh, I would want to watch this show too. This would also be a really fun show in an alternate universe.” But even as charming as that group is, I think there’s a sense of relief that comes in that scene where Irving and Dylan and Helly do come out of the elevator, because we’ve invested so much in them, and we love them so much, and we want to see them together. We talked about drawing it out a little bit, but at the end of the day we know what people want, let’s get there."
Severance Season 2 is exclusively available on Apple TV+.
