In season 1 of The Fallout, the protagonist, Lucy MacLean, shoots her mother—a ghoul—in the head because she wants to end her mother's suffering. The Fallout is gearing up for Season 2 with no official release date yet. The second installment of the post-apocalyptic series is reportedly in the works per Tom’s Guide and will air sometime between 2025 and 2026.

The story revolves around vault-dweller Lucy MacLean and her quest to find her father in a ravaged world after a group of raiders whisks him away to DSR Headquarters.

From meeting the possible love of her life Max and the unrelenting yet charming Ghoul, she embarks on a quest in a world with everything and everyone wanting to attack her.

While the series packs action as promised from the popular video game, the series does have heavy emotions with unpredictable plot twists. Throughout Lucy’s journey, she gets glimpses of her mother Rose MacLean who passed away when she was a child (or so she thought).

All this time Lucy lived under the illusion of her mother dying due to natural causes. However, things took a dramatic turn after she found out the truth about not just her mom but her father’s ulterior motives.

Circling back to when she arrived at DSR Headquarters, Lucy confronts Moldaver - the raider who kidnapped her father. Her dad was in a cage, and a ghoul sat at the table. However, this ghoul was rather peculiar and seemed to have physically deteriorated with no facial recognition left.

Furthermore, the ghoul appeared non-lethal and was barely alive - this was her mother, Rose MacLean as revealed by her father and Moldaver during a confrontational scene.

As Lucy began recalling events from her childhood including her mother’s memories, she was able to connect the dots to Moldaver’s theory and was left gobsmacked by the truth.

However, after Moldaver’s death when the brotherhood struck, Lucy was still reeling when Max had waltzed in to save her. However, in his attempt to react to the revelation of her father’s actions, Lucy’s dad delivers a tough blow knocking Max unconscious.

Before things escalated further, the Ghoul walked in on the two shooting a bullet that grazed the titan armored antagonist. However, Lucy’s dad escapes leaving just the two of them - Lucy has to make a big decision.

The Ghoul offered her a chance to team up to “make her makers,” instead of succumbing to certain doom thanks to Max’s brotherhood. Just before sealing her fate to team up, Lucy thought hard about her next actions and coldly stared at the gun in front of her.

She quickly grabbed it and shot her ghoulish mother in the head rendering her lifeless. This wasn’t easy for her considering how much she loved her mom and continually thought of her.

What was Lucy's last memory of her mom before shooting her in The Fallout?

As mentioned in The Fallout, Lucy would often think about her mom especially the day she had a sham wedding. Before the episodes climaxed, Lucy recalled her fondest memory with her mother when she was a child.

She’d spend quality time with her mom in the make-shift crop fields where the bright light imitating the sun would shine hard as they nonchalantly basked in the afterglow of their time as mother and daughter.

After Moldaver dropped the bombshell, that memory was slightly different: Instead of her mom, Lucy recalled seeing Moldaver who was a fellow vault-dweller before things took an ugly turn.

The raider also mentioned how Lucy strongly resembled her mother in the early episodes of The Fallout. This remark alone continued to stay with Lucy throughout her harrowing journey outside the Vault until she learned about the truth. Whether or not Lucy will make an appearance in potential flashback episodes for Season 2 of The Fallout remains to be seen.
