The drama escalates in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6 when Matt Murdock dons his Daredevil suit again.
Since the revival series premiered, Matt Murdock and his nemesis Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) have maintained an aversion to their respective alter egos, but facades are ripped in the latest episode literally and metaphorically.
Matt puts on his Devil suit to fight Muse, while Fisk's growing dissatisfaction with his current life as New York's Mayor becomes apparent when he complains about his suits not fitting him anymore. His suit jacket rips.
The ripping of Kingpin's suit signifies that Fisk's facade as New York elite is coming off, and he is itching to return to his criminal ways. This is visible as he sets up a violent task force after getting rejected in the latest episode.
Read on for a detailed discussion on the symbolism behind the ripping of Fisk's suit in Daredevil: Born Again.
Exploring the symbolism behind Kingpin ripping his suit in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6
Kingpin ripping his suit in Daredevil: Born Again, Episode 6 might be an inconsequential moment for some, but it seems like a subtle warning of what is to come.
Throughout the reboot series, Kingpin is trying his best to leave his violent and criminal past behind and become a good guy, as the mayor of New York City. It is a position he seems to hold dearly.
However, old habits die hard. Fisk's facade of being a Mayor who wants to clean up the streets of New York is slowly slipping away, and the ripping of his suit seems to represent the fact. In a key scene, Fisk says to his wife, Vanessa:
''[These] suits aren't fitting like they were."
Here, suits represent the civilised persona of Fisk who wishes to lead a legitimate life after stepping into the mayoral shoes in Episode 1. The suit not fitting symbolizes how this civilized way of life is not suiting Kingpin anymore, and he wants to break free (rip the suit) and get back to his old ways of violence.
Episode 6 foreshadows that Fisk might become Kingpin again.
Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6 hints at a showdown between Kingpin and Daredevil
Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk started out on a note of truce in the Daredevil: Born Again premiere, with a pact not to go back to their old identities as Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively. However facades are slowly being ripped away for both.
After resisting for five episodes, Matt has finally donned his Daredevil suit to protect Angel Del Toro and fight Muse. This was a turning point for Episode 6 because it officially marked Murdock's return as Daredevil in Born Again.
On the other hand, Fisk is growing dissatisfied with his monotonous and civilized life as New York's Mayor, which is apparent in the sadistic pleasure he takes in torturing Adam, his wife's lover.
The ripping of his suit in Episode 6 hints that Fisk will soon tear the shackles of fake goodness and become Kingpin once again and, naturally, come after Daredevil. Their truce is at risk, and Born Again might be gearing up for an epic battle between the two characters.
After the resistance he received from the New York elite, especially from Hawkeye's Jack Duquesne, for his Red Hook project, Fisk's threshold of patience is thinning. In no time, he will be back as the underground crime lord from the Netflix's parent series.
