Camryn Manheim's portrayal of Kate Dixon on Law & Order was pivotal. Law & Order show opened its 24th season with shocking news on Saturday. Detectives Jalen Shaw and Vincent Riley were stunned in the episode titled "Catch and Kill" when they found that Lieutenant Kate Dixon was no longer their boss at the NYPD's 27th Precinct. It wasn't until Dixon finally sent word as to why she had suddenly disappeared that things began to make a little more sense.
Kate was part of the North Homicide Squad in Manhattan's 27th precinct, and Camryn replaced S. Epatha Merkerson's character of Lieutenant Anita Van Buren. This role ran for nearly 400 episodes in the show's original run.
Camryn signed on for the first three seasons of the show but exited before the start of season 24. While she has not disclosed why she left, it appears to be a behind-the-scenes decision related to the show's budgetary restrictions.
The reason behind Camryn Manheim’s exit from Law & Order
NBC announced Camryn's departure before the season 23 finale, but her departure was addressed in that episode and resolved in the season 24 premiere. Although the actress hasn't officially said anything about her departure, we can creatively assume that this is a behind-the-scenes decision.
As explained in The Hollywood Reporter, Camryn was leaving because of the increasing pressure to lower budgets, as the show has fewer viewers for linear television. Law & Order used to be one of the biggest television shows, but now it has a lot more competition.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Wolf Entertainment’s head Dick Wolf didn’t have anything to say precisely. But he confirmed Manheim’s exit by saying,
“I thank Camryn for her three wonderful seasons helping us relaunch Law & Order. She is a class act and I wish her nothing but the best for her next chapter,”
Almost immediately after NBC officially announced Manheim's departure from the show, she shared an Instagram post with an official statement praising her colleagues and describing her time on the show as an "incredible experience."
How did Lieutenant Dixon’s story end in Law & Order?
Detective Shaw and Detective Riley were called to a murder scene in the Law & Order Season 24 opener. They were taken aback when Jessica Brady unexpectedly arrived at their crime scene. Their amazement was compounded when they learned that Jessica Brady was their new lieutenant.
It appeared that the mystery surrounding her disappearance would be investigated at some point during the season. Eventually, however, we found out that she had relocated to Florida to be closer to her son following his employment at a Florida school. This information was disclosed in a text message to Riley, and it appears to have been intended to justify her departure while keeping the door open for her potential return.
The text read:
“Patrick got a great job at a school in Miami. Mom is tagging along. Didn’t want to make a big to-do about it, tears and all that. Come visit."
