Alexi Hawley’s The Rookie came back with its 7th season on January 7, 2025, but the premiere episode did not feature Jenna Dewan, who plays the role of Bailey, the series protagonist John Nolan’s (Nathan Fillion) wife. The Rookie Season 3 introduced Dewan as a firefighter. Her character then went on to become a series regular as she and Nolan developed a relationship, which led to their marriage.
While Bailey’s absence did make the fans concerned about her character and whether she will be returning, the good news is she indeed will. The first two episodes of The Rookie, however, will not feature Bailey but she will be coming back from the third episode.
Let us now explore in detail the reasons behind Bailey’s absence in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1 and what is in store for this character post the first two episodes this season.
Why was Bailey absent in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1?
The reason behind Bailey’s absence in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 1 is Jenna Dewan's pregnancy in real life. Since the actress was pregnant, she could not appear in the first two episodes of the 7th season.
As Alexi Hawley mentioned in an interview with TV Line,
"As you know, Jenna [Dewan]’s about to have a baby in real life, so we probably won’t see [Bailey] for the first few episodes because of that."
Dewan announced her pregnancy back in January 2024 and gave birth to her daughter, Rhiannon, in June 2024. Besides the newborn, she has two more children, a daughter named Everly with Channing Tatum, her ex-husband, and a son named Callum with Steve Kazee, her fiancée. Rhiannon is their second child together.
When will Bailey return in The Rookie Season 7?
As it is confirmed that Jenna Dewan is not leaving The Rookie and will come back by the third episode of season 7, fans can expect to
"see her at the end of Episode 3"
as mentioned in Hawley’s interview with ScreenRant. With her comeback in episode 3, things are supposed to be on the usual track regarding her storyline as the synopsis for the episode says,
"Ahead of Bailey’s return home, John looks for clues to locate Jason Wyler. Then, Tim and Lucy swap rookies; a friendly face resurfaces at the station, and Wesley feels unsettled over Angela."
In a recent interview with Parade, Dewan mentioned how Jason, whom they had put behind bars, was hell-bent on revenge and causing a nuisance in their lives and their relationship. She mentioned,
“We come back strong. Because right away, Jason is on the run and looking for Bailey and threatening our lives and our relationship. I’m right away dealing with that and how we’re going to protect ourselves and capture him.”
However, Jason is not likely to cause much harm to the couple as Hawley had mentioned to Parade that his storyline would reach a conclusion within the first half of the season, which will run for 18 episodes.
The Rookie can be streamed on Hulu.
