Silo got off to an exciting start on Apple TV+, and the second season is expected to perform the same. Silo is a sci-fi dystopian drama based on the novels Wool, Shift, and Dust by Hugh Howey. It tells the story of survivors who live in a very underground community. Staying on top of the community are the ones with power while the workers are stuck at the bottom.
Everyone learns that the outside world is a desolate wasteland, and when someone asks to "go outside" it usually results in death. When a junior engineer named Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) begins to ask questions and inquire about the truth, the result is a shocking revelation that forces her to go outside herself.
Miraculously, she survives owing to a special modification built into her suit. The heat tape in Silo saves Juliette in the Season 1 finale, this tape will be central to the entire Season 2 storyline.
How does Juliette get access to the heat tape in Silo?
Martha Walker (Harriet Walter), Juliette's closest friend and almost motherly figure is devastated to learn of Juliette's fate. Despite not having left her office for 25 years, she makes the arduous journey to see her ex, Carla (Clare Perkins), who is the head of supplies.
Martha arranges for the thermal tape on Juliette's suit to be replaced with a better heat tape silo from the machine room. This tape is of high quality, as opposed to the inferior tape typically used on cleaners' suits. This change goes unnoticed and ultimately keeps Juliette away from the toxins outside.
Juliette wears a full suit, including a helmet. She refuses to clean the camera lens, pointing it at the wasteland; and drops the cleaning cloth in front of the camera. She keeps walking, moving farther and farther without collapsing, confusing everyone looking at the scene from her body camera. When she reaches the top of a hill, she looks down and sees many other communities and realizes she is not alone. There are other survivors, just like her. This is how season 1 of the show ends in a cliffhanger.

The heat tape’s significance in Silo
Heat tape in the show is a type of tape used to encircle the wrists of containment suits. This is used to protect the inside of the wearer's skin from outside toxins by sealing any gaping holes in the suit around the wrists and ankles.
At the end of Silo season 1, the tape stolen by Juliette is revealed to have been used to seal the suits of people leaving the inner space. The IT deliberately uses inferior tape to insulate the suits, knowing that it will wear off over time, exposing those leaving to the toxic environment outside.
After Juliette leaves, Bernard fears a rebellion will break out in Silo 18. He can't figure out how to put down the rebellion before it's too late. He has Martha and Carla arrested, thinking that punishing them will scare the citizens. Later, he shows his finesse in controlling public opinion by claiming that Juliette survived longer than previous cleaners because the IT sealed her suit with fine duct tape.
He calls Juliette a hero. He claims that she risked her life by allowing IT to use a new type of tape on her suit. He concludes his speech to the citizens of Silo 18 by claiming that Juliette's sacrifice has been instrumental in helping them find a way out of the confinement.
