Among the beloved sitcoms on CBS is Ghosts, which offers an engaging story of a couple who inherited a grand and old mansion known as the Woodstone Mansion, only to find that it's far beyond a normal place. The place is filled with spirits, not just from one ear but many.

This is what makes the story different from typical sitcoms, as it introduces viewers to a colorful bunch of ghosts, each with a unique story and background. One of the most notable spooks in the show is Flower, who is actually a ghost of a woman named Susan "Flower" Montero.

It was in Ghosts Season 3 when Flower bid farewell to her friends, especially Jay and Sam. The main reason for this character's exit was due to the creator's decision to conclude Flower's story by moving her to the afterlife, but her departure wasn't permanent.

As seen in the show, Flower belongs to the 1960s era and can be best described as a free-spirited hippie. She has a loving attitude toward life, and her background is full of classic '60s elements. The ghost spent her life moving between communes and cults, embracing that era’s spirit of rebellion and community living.

Flower's look matches her personality too. She usually wears bright, flowy hippie clothes, has long, dark brown hair, a pair of glasses, and even carries the scars of her unusual death. What's more intriguing to know about this ghost is that if she passes through a human, she can make them feel as if they were temporarily high.

Why did Flower leave in Ghosts Season 3: Character's departure explored

As previously mentioned, Flower remained a key spirit in Ghosts, and it was revealed what actually happened to her. At the end of Season 2, Jay and Sam witnessed a flash of light, which means a ghost is set for the afterlife.

However, the second chapter didn't reveal who it was until Ghosts Season 3 arrived and confirmed it was the quirky and loving spook, Flower. As explained by showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, they planned to end Season 2 with a ghost moving on.

Initially, they couldn't finalize which ghost would depart from the mansion, but eventually chose Flower:

"...we didn’t know exactly who it was gonna be... we wanted to be someone who was consequential, someone that was impactful. We landed on Flower, [who we thought] would be an interesting ghost to disappear because it would create a lot of storylines."

Wiseman continued:

"A lot of people would have different reactions. Thor, obviously, is in love with Flower and would be super devastated. Other ghosts would be jealous of her because hasn’t been there as long. So it just seemed like we’d create a lot of stories."

After much discussion, they chose Flower because they felt her departure would have a strong impact, especially on Thor, who was in love with her, and it would create emotional storylines for the rest of the ghosts, too.

Their decision worked well for the story. Thor was heartbroken after Flower’s disappearance, and it opened up a new storyline where he began a relationship with Nancy, another ghost who got more screen time as a result.

The spirits at the mansion, including Thor, believed that Flower had left for good and that she would never return. Because who comes back from the afterlife? No one. However, a big twist came later in Season 3 when it was revealed that Flower hadn’t actually moved on; she had fallen into a well and got stuck.

During the same interview, Wiseman shed light on the possibility of Flower's return, saying:

"It’s interesting, when a ghost gets sucked off on the show, they’re not dead. They’re all already dead. So we’ve had ways in previous episodes to bring in ghosts who have been sucked off [come] back for stories and whatnot."

The showrunner continued:

"And we tell stories with flashbacks, etc. So, yeah, in theory, there would be ways of still seeing a ghost who has moved on."

Turned out that Flower never landed in the afterlife. The reason? Being a ghost, she couldn’t interact with the walls. As seen in Ghosts Season 3, Hetty eventually saved her by dropping down the cord she had used in her own death, marking a rare emotional moment for Hetty.
