Diego is popularly known as 'The Kraken' in Netflix's The Umbrella Academy. Although, his hero name doesn't exactly align with his real superpower - telekinesis.
So, why this unrelated nickname for Diego? The answer is simple - Per the comics, Diego can reportedly stay underwater for a very long time. While underwater, he can also use impressive combat tactics including knife-throwing. Although it's a skill that's deadly on land, in water it can only get more dangerous.
Especially since humans can't exactly focus on holding their breath and defending themselves from knives being thrown at them at the same time. Moreover, Diego is one of the more powerful Hargreeves siblings apart from his brother, Five.
However, none of the five seasons have featured an underwater scene in which Diego could flaunt his Kraken-like powers of strength and breath-holding techniques. Even in the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy, only Diego's primary powers were in focus. However, holding his breath for a while isn't the only thing he can do.
What are Diego's powers in The Umbrella Academy?
Diego's primary power is a very niche form of telekineses - he can move objects such as knives, furniture, small devices, and more with his mind. Additionally, he can also alter the speed of his attacks while moving these objects even without looking at a target!
However, he hasn't been able to maintain constant control with larger objects such as a car or even building debris for that matter. While his telekinesis continues to be his dominant power, the man is a living weapon. Diego is incredibly proficient with any kind of hand-held weapon - particularly knives and guns.
Since he initially was a rouge of the Hargreeves family, Diego had to train a whole lot to perfect his craft. Moreover, he's also a skilled martial artist in The Umbrella Academy, and has held his own in several tense situations. All things considered, Diego is a powerhouse proving to be resourceful to his siblings throughout the four seasons of The Umbrella Academy.
How did Diego lose his powers in The Umbrella Academy?
As mentioned earlier, Diego possesses many powers including controlling the trajectory of small objects and knife-throwing. However, the end of Season 3 saw each of the Hargreeves siblings, including Diego, lose their powers.
Neither of them had a choice but to surrender their powers for good. After coming to terms with it and for the welfare of their planet and home, Diego too made the conscious decision to forgo his powers. Season 4 emphasizes his lost powers even in knife throwing.
Does Diego's son in The Umbrella Academy have powers?
In Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, Diego's ex-girlfriend Lila dropped a bombshell on him: he's a father. She reveals that Stanley is their 12-year-old son who she's been caring for all these years by herself. Nevertheless, the fandom initially thought that with two super-parents, Stanley would be quite the hero.
During a scene in season 3, Stanley even does a perfect knife throw resembling his father's trait. However, as the season unraveled, Stanley was found to be without powers - a regular human. He didn't inherit powers from his mom or dad. The reason for that is credited to an even bigger bombshell.
Is Stanley Diego's real son in The Umbrella Academy?
The bombshell mentioned earlier is this - No, Stanley isn't Diego and Lyla's real son. Around the end of the 3rd season, after being gone for months together, Lila finally shows up in front of Diego. Taking notice of how close the two had bonded, she revealed that Stanley wasn't Diego or her son.
Diego was thrown in utter confusion and pain especially since he'd grown so close to Stanley. While it was a heartbreaking ordeal, since Stanley didn't even belong to the timeline they were in, he had to go back to his real home.
What's even more tragic is Stanley's last appearance was in Season 3, episode 6. The happy lad had merely stepped out to get a slushie for himself when he was suddenly killed by the antagonist Kugelblitz right in front of Diego and Lyla.
You can follow the adventures of the Hargreeves family throughout all four seasons of The Umbrella Academy on Netflix.
