After multiple failed attempts to conceive a child, it is revealed that both Chandler and Monica are not fertile enough to get pregnant and have kids, resulting in them taking adoption as their only option.


Chandler and Monica have been one of the most iconic couples in the American sitcom Friends. The show has various memorable moments through the couple, defining the meaning of a relationship between true friends.


The story of Chandler and Monica began during Ross Geller’s marriage to Emily Waltham in London. While Ross screwed up his marriage with Emily by taking the wrong name at the ceremony, Chandler and Monica started getting attracted to each other. The couple got married to each other in the episode “The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding" parts one and two which were the finale episodes of season 7.

While Chandler and Monica were an ideal couple for most of the entire series, there was an instance where they had to face a curveball. While Monica wanted a baby, even after numerous attempts the two were unable to get pregnant. That is when they decided to test themselves and it was revealed that both Chandler and Monica were not fertile enough to have a baby together. Even though this news devastated the couple, they managed to overcome the situation, initially thinking of using a sperm donor but ending up believing that adoption was the perfect way of having a kid.

It is during the Thanksgiving episode of season 10 when Chandler and Monica get a call from the adoption center stating that a girl from Ohio who is pregnant has decided to consider them as valid candidates. As the story progresses, we see Chandler and Monica traveling to Ohio and meeting up with the pregnant girl named Erica Simmons.


After conversing with her, the duo brings Erica back to New York at her request and takes her sightseeing. After meeting up with Chandler and Monica and getting comfortable with them, Erica finally agrees to give her baby to the duo and finalizes them as the parents of her child.

At the beginning of the adoption journey, it was revealed to Chandler and Monica that Erica was pregnant with a single child. At the time of labor, there was a mix of emotions before Erica gave birth to her first child. While initially there were celebrations and a welcoming mood for bringing in their baby, the doctor announced that Erica had to brace herself as another baby was coming up. While initially Erica herself was surprised by the fact that the 2 heartbeats she was told by the doctors were hers and the baby, Chandler and Monica accepted the second baby as well. By the end of the episode, it was revealed that the couple had both a boy and a girl. It was later revealed that the couple named the boy Jack (after Monica’s father) and the girl Erica.
