Superman and Lois concluded with 4 seasons, and as per Wolé Parks, who played the role of Steel, a.k.a John Henry Irons, in the show The Death of Superman of the Arrowverse, almost turned out differently.
As the production team took certain creative liberties with the show, fans saw a new adaptation of The Death of Superman saga in Superman and Lois Season 4. Despite being one of the most iconic Man of Steel moments in the DC universe, the show almost went ahead with a different version of The Death of Superman.
Let us now explore why Superman and Lois was not completely faithful to the Reign of The Superman saga.
Wolé Parks talks about Superman’s death arc in Superman and Lois Season 4
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Parks mentioned that initially, he was supposed to have a bigger role in Superman and Lois Season 4. Since the character of Steel was heavily involved with The Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen, it was only natural for him to have a larger presence in the show during Clerk Kent’s death had season 4 run longer.
Parks said,
“I will say yes, the whole idea of Steelworks and all this stuff, they were planning to do all that. The Death of Superman arc was going to be bigger than it is. They did a great job with it for season 4, there were bigger ideas out there. And then The CW and Warner Bros. were like, 'You got one season, you got to reduce budget, so make it work.”
From Parks’ comments, it becomes clear that the show was unable to follow the Reign of the Supermen story because of budget constraints.
Superman and Lois does not follow the Reign of The Superman saga faithfully
Since the very first season, Superman and Lois has been bringing pieces of the storyline together for The Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen and therefore, the show has given equal importance to characters like Steel.
There was no Conner Kent in Superman and Lois and yet there were Jonathan and Jordan Kent, who became the Superboys. If only the show had a similar budget to its previous seasons and also allowed a longer run time for each episode, the Reign of the Supermen saga would have been adapted more faithfully.
Ultimately, as Parks explained, things did not go that way, which led to cutting Superman’s death arc shorter and, therefore, difficult to properly adapt Reign of the Supermen.
However, the budget or time constraints did not stop Superman and Lois from delivering a solid finale that wraps up all the storylines and packs an emotional punch with the ending.
Superman and Lois can be streamed on Hulu.
