Matt Casey was a pivotal part of Chicago Fire throughout the first 10 seasons. However, Jesse Spencer, the actor who played Matt Casey, decided to leave Chicago Fire during season 10. The character was subsequently written off by the show.

Despite his abrubt exit, the writers and producers of the show ensured that there was ample room in the narrative for Casey to return in the near future if he so desired.

Although his regular role came to an end upon the completion of his 200th episode on Chicago Fire, Matt Casey subseqently returned to the season 10 finale and on three more instances during subsequent seasons of the show.

The love and admiration that Jesse Spencer was able to amass during his long tenure as one of the principal actors on Chicago Fire and the chief firefighter at Firehouse 51 has led to widespread audience anticipation in favor of his return.

Jesse Spencer left the show, marking an end to a long and fruitful career on network television to focus on other projects as well as devote time to his family. This decision came after he got married and his wife gave birth to their child. Here's everything we know.

Jesse Spencer's reasons behind leaving Chicago Fire explained

Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinney were among the top stars on Chicago Fire and were able to win over countless fans by their charm and acting prowess. Naturally it came as a shock to the audiences when Spencer announced that he will no longer play Matt Casey after episode 5 of season 10.

The writers of the show developed a convincing exit for the character in keeping with the narrative. Casey left Firehouse 51 to move to Oregon so that he could provide for and take care of his former colleague Andrew Darden's sons. The children were poised to be separated by custody struggles and therefore Casey stepped in to be their legal guardian.

During episode 200 of the show, which was also titled as Two Hundred, Casey first came to know that the two siblings were on the verge of being split up by foster care services. As a testament to this exemplary character, Casey decided to do his bit in order to help.

Speaking about his departure from the show, Spencer spoke at length with US Weekly back in 2022. He stated:

"I realized I’ve been doing TV for a long time. I added it up, and I think this year (2022) is my 18th year of network television... I called (showrunner) Derek (Haas) and broke him the news, said I thought it was time to leave the show, and he agreed that we should at least get Casey to 200 episodes. It was a difficult decision because I’ve loved the show from the start, but there are other things that I would like to do in the future, and there’s some family that I need to take care of, and 18 years is a long time."

How many times has Casey returned to Chicago Fire following his official exit?

Following his exit from Chicago Fire as a regular character midway through season 10, Casey has returned back to the show four times in total. He returned in the season 10 finale for Severide and Kidd's wedding. He also appeared twice during season 11 and once on season 12.
