The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon continues to enthrall fans with its ongoing Season 2 on AMC. The horror anthology primarily focuses on Norman Reedus’s character Daryl Dixon’s journey after the events of The Walking Dead.
In addition to the beloved Daryl, the fandom was also privileged to see another splendid character from the show in the form of Carol Peletier (played by Melissa McBride). Carol and Daryl have been platonic for the longest time with occasional sparks flying between them.
The duo hit it off since day 1 and continue to have each other's backs. Carol is perhaps the only person Daryl trusts after Rick Grimes and the rest of his post-apocalypse crew. Daryl has played a very pivotal role in Carol’s overall character development.
Considering she started as a meek single mother naturally terrified of zombies, wanting to protect her daughter Sophia (something she sadly couldn’t do). Shortly after her daughter’s death, Carol grew by leaps and bounds, mastering the art of survival thanks to Daryl and the crew.
She became the ultimate survivor who’d do whatever it took to live - even lying about her daughter’s death as noted in Season 2 episode 1 of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
Why did Carol lie about her daughter Sophia in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon?
Carol experienced a haunting ordeal as a mother when her tween daughter Sophia died in The Walking Dead. In Season 2, she conceals the truth about Sophia’s death with a lie during a conversation with Ash (played by Manish Dayal). The primary reason she lied was to board a plane to France to find Daryl.
After catching an inkling of Daryl’s possible whereabouts in France, a nomadic Carol seeks help from Ash to board his plane and leave for France. The two met while she was attempting to inspect his greenhouse for supplies and sleuth for resources.
Unexpectedly caught by him, the conversation began with the duo almost getting into a heated altercation. After Carol calmed him down, she asked him for a ride to France.
He began prodding Carol about motives and wanted to enquire who was waiting for her in France. At this juncture, a group of walkers were beginning to close in on them.
Carol knew about Ash losing his son and decided to leverage her own story of losing Sophia, except she lied. Instead of being truthful, she convinced Ash to go to France under the pretense of finding her daughter.
With the walkers hot on their trail and Ash out of ethanol, he decided to allow Carol on the plane, and the two set off for France. Carol might’ve escaped the consequence of lying for now, but it may come to haunt her later in the remainder of the season.
How did Carol's daughter Sophia die in The Walking Dead?
It couldn’t possibly have been easy for Carol to lie about her daughter Sophia’s death. Perhaps after all this time, she’s still living in denial, and part of her hopes Sophia’s alive, but deep down she knows that she will never see her beloved girl again.
Carol and Sophia were popular characters throughout Seasons 1 and 2. However, during a walker ambush in Season 2, Sophia got caught in an attempt to hide from them. Despite Carol being around, a walker found her hiding spot and proceeded to bite her resulting in her turning.
Carol painfully had to helplessly watch her daughter turn into the very thing she went on to ruthlessly kill. It was during this time that Daryl comforted her and restrained her from edging any closer to a turned Sophia. She was put out of her misery when the group’s ringleader Rick put a bullet in her head.
Whether or not we may see glimpses of Sophia in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon remains uncertain. You can binge Season 2 only on AMC!
