As Blue Bloods is headed toward its conclusion, the makers are leaving no stone unturned to make the final season the most exciting. The CBS show is bringing back an iconic villain to raise the stakes for the Reagans in the last few episodes.

Lori Loughlin, who was seen as Grace in an earlier episode of the police procedural drama, has reprised her role in Blue Bloods season 14 episode 14, New York Minute. Loughlin made her previous appearance in the show in the season 7 premiere in 2016.

The last time we saw Grace, she was bitter with Frank for not stopping her son from being a police officer. It looks like Grace is still holding grudges against the Reagans as she returns to the series to prevent Danny from receiving an award.

In Blue Bloods’ episode New York Minute, Danny is supposed to win a medal of honor from the Irish Society for his service as a police officer. However, the organization decided to rescind the award at the last minute, citing that the NYPD officer had lost his temper and shown impulsiveness several times.

The decision to withhold the honor lies with Grace Edwards, who comes from a family of police officers. Lori Loughlin reprises her role as Grace after seven years and once again comes face to face with Frank, against who she holds some past grudges.

Frank tries to reason with her, telling her that his son is a decorated cop and a fine family man who should not be devoid of the award. However, Grace calls Danny a ‘a very loose cannon’ who comes from a very visible family of cops.

While Danny rarely gets affected by honors and medals, he feels Grace is overlooking his service because of her personal issues with his family. Grace’s return can severely affect Danny, who is already feeling exhausted and worn out.

The situation can either lead him to wonder if it is time to leave his detective role or push him to prove himself even more, determined to earn the recognition he deserves. Grace has introduced a conflict in Danny’s storyline that can play a major role in the final episodes of Blue Bloods.

Grace goes back a long way with the Reagans. In Blue Bloods season 7, episode 1, The Greater Good, she is seen as a recent widow whose husband died in the line of duty. Grace does not want her son to suffer the same fate as his dad.

She asks Frank to take her son out of the NYPD training academy so he does not become a cop. However, Frank declines her request, stating that her son should choose his own career instead of following what Grace wants. This leaves her fuming with anger as she worries about her son’s future.

Following her appearance on Blue Bloods, Lori Loughlin’s involvement in the college admissions scandal was exposed, and she had to spend two months in prison. The scandal also impacted her acting career.

However, in 2024, Blue Bloods got her on board for another guest appearance as Grace. In an interview with Newsday, Loughlin talked about filming for the show again after seven years, and that too for one of the final episodes. She said:

“They [the cast and crew] were feeling very nostalgic and grateful for the time they’ve had together. A lot of affection and warmth, because everyone was trying to just embrace the final moments.”

Loughlin added that during filming, the cast was still hopeful about CBS saving the show:

“I think at that point there was a little bit of hope that maybe CBS would reverse the decision. Tom kept saying, ‘They're going to come to their senses.’”

Blue Bloods season 14 airs new episodes on CBS on Fridays at 10 PM ET/PT.
