Taylor Sheridan's Landman highlights the hazards of working in the oil business. He established this with the explosion in Episode 1, which took the lives of 3 crew members, along with Elvio, Ariana's husband.
While Cooper is met with suspicion as the sole survivor of that explosion, especially by Manuel (Elvio's cousins and his new crew members), Arina does not blame him for her husband's death. She trusts him and grows fond of him because her husband liked Cooper, and she feels that he is trustworthy and genuine. As seen in recent episodes, she leans on him for support.
Ariana trusts Cooper because of her late husband in Landman
Filled with survivor's guilt, Cooper visits the Medina family to pay respects for Elvio's death. That is the first time he meets Ariana and her newborn baby. Feeling responsible for her, he tries to make her laugh and establish a friendship with her.
Ariana knows Cooper is trustworthy because Elvio instantly liked him in Episode 1. Reciprocating her late husband's feelings, she too feels comfortable and safe around Cooper and does not blame him for her husband's death.
However, Manuel does not like their closeness and violently warns Cooper to stay away from his cousin's widow. While Manuel was already angry with Boss' decision to hire Cooper as a crew member, his closeness with Ariana could also create a problem for him in the future.
Ariana's closeness with Cooper in Landman could end up spelling trouble
After Cooper visits her house, Ariana also takes a liking to him. She is vulnerable, having to manage her newborn and finances all by herself.
After attending her husband's wake in Landman Episode 4, she calls Cooper. Cooper also agrees to see her and meets her in Episode 5.
He helps her with bills and mows her lawn. Just as things were going well for both of them and Ariana was enjoying some honest company after Elvio's death, Manuel shows up. He threatens Cooper on his visit to Ariana again.
That is when Ariana kisses Cooper and establishes that she does not care what Mauel thinks of her relationship with him.
Landman Episode 5 ended badly for Cooper as his trailer is ambushed by Manuel and Antonio, who beat him to a pulp, and it is unclear whether he is alive at the end of the episode.
