With the finale of Agatha All Along dropping on October 30, 2024, one thing has been established, despite being the titular character of the show, Agatha is not really a hero. She is mostly a villain with some qualities of kindness to her.
The last episode of Agatha All Along, titled Maiden, Mother, Crone, goes back to 1750 and shows a pregnant Agatha, who is about to give birth in the woods. She gives birth to her son, Nicholas Scratch.
Though Nicholas was supposed to be a stillborn, Agatha manages to keep him alive by striking a deal with Rio Vidal, aka Death.
The next scene shows Agatha cradling baby Nicholas and walking when she comes across a coven in a protective circle. She explains to them that she, along with her baby, have not eaten anything for days and the coven welcomes them into their circle.
Once inside the circle, Agatha uses her siphoning powers to suck the witches dry. Her simple reason for doing this is stealing powers so that she can survive and so she never hesitates killing witches.
The following article contains spoilers.
Agatha murders witches to steal their power
Initially, after giving birth to Nicholas, Agatha’s actions seemed to be fueled by the desire to keep her son alive. However, as already established, Agatha is not exactly the good guy in the show and thus, after Nicholas Scratch dies, she keeps pulling off this con for years.
Agatha gathers covens to walk down the Witches’ Road and when it does not appear, she keeps screaming at them until they eventually blast her. She then takes their power and leaves their husks to get wasted in the woods.
In Agatha All Along, she would have pulled the same trick on the coven but in this case, Billy Maximoff, with his own powers created the Witches' Road.
Now, when the question comes why she does these things, the simple answer is, of course, for power. She explains that when Nicholas asks for food that she can’t provide, she can’t offer him protection from Death.
She can blast things, expend her power, and can also move things with the help of her mind. However, without Nicholas, she cannot create anything and only destroy things. The most likely implication that comes here is that once she uses her powers and spends it, she again replenishes it by killing other witches and siphoning their powers.
Another implication can be that since Nicholas needs his food, Agatha kills the witches for power to stay young and powerful.

Agatha steals power from the Witches to protect her son Nicholas Scratch
While Agatha does enjoy killing witches, another major reason behind her killing them mercilessly is protecting Nicholas. Since Nicholas was supposed to die at birth itself, it is important for Agatha to stay powerful and alive long enough to protect Nicholas against Death.
However, she does not succeed as it seems that Nicholas probably convinces her to stop killing witches; as a result, Rio/Death comes for him when they were asleep. Nicholas kisses his mother on her cheeks and leaves and when Agatha wakes up the next morning, she finds herself beside Nicholas’s dead body.
Once Nicholas is dead, Agatha does not have any logical explanation behind continuing to kill the witches for power. However, having nothing else left to do with her life, she continues doing whatever she previously did.
In her own interpretation, she says this is a game of survival. If she does not kill the witches, they will kill her. She tells Billy in episode 6,
“You survived, like witches have been doing for centuries… That’s what kept you alive. That’s what makes you special. That’s what makes you a witch.”
