Agatha All Along finale gave answers to several questions about Agatha Harkness' past. The season finale aired on Disney+ on October 30, 2024, giving the perfect conclusion to the hit Marvel series' first instalment.
The last couple of episodes make some surprising revelations by delving into Agatha and Billy's past. A significant plot point comes when it is revealed that Agatha used to kill witches centuries ago.
She created the legend of the Witches’ Road to lure other witches to join her. Once they got close to her, Agatha killed them to absorb their powers. Over the years, she goes on destroying other covens and increases her strength.
Agatha kills witches out of grief and hunger for power in Agatha All Along
Agatha doesn’t kill witches just because she is evil, instead, her actions are a result of her grief, fear, and hunger for power. In the ninth episode of Agatha All Along, a flashback to the 1750s is showcased, where Agatha gives birth to her son, Nicholas, under stressful circumstances.
As she is about to give birth in the woods, a young Rio shows up. As Rio is connected to death, she warns Agatha that her son will not live for long. Agatha begs Rio to keep her son alive, but the green witch says she can offer her ‘only time.’
Agatha knows that this means Nicholas’ life is temporary and Rio could return to get him at any moment. Agatha and Nicholas spend the next six years traveling from one coven to another. They often move, partly to survive and partly because Agatha believes the other witches would kill them if they stayed.
Nicholas is innocent and often questions why they can not just live peacefully, but Agatha is too afraid to lose him, and so, cannot give him a normal life. She believes that no one can protect them, and this fear starts to turn her cold-hearted.
She begins to kill other witches to take their power, all to protect herself and her son. When Rio finally returns, Nicholas falls ill and dies, leaving Agatha devastated. After losing him, Agatha’s grief and anger make her desperate for power.
She uses a song she created with Nicholas, The Ballad of the Witches’ Road, as a trick to lure other witches. She spreads a rumor about a magical path called the Witches’ Road, claiming it can give tremendous magical powers. Other witches believe her and join her in search of the Road, but it is all a facade.
Agatha uses the legend to get close to these witches, then steals their power and kills them. She repeats this trick for years, building her strength while destroying other covens. In the present-day, Billy accidentally created the Witches’ Road for real.
His actions change the legend of the Road that Agatha had used as a trap, and it becomes more than just a myth. When Billy learns that he created the Road, he starts to feel guilty, but Agatha tries to calm him down.
She reminds him that she was planning to kill the other witches anyway, so they would have died whether he created the Road or not. Agatha’s pain and fear from losing Nicholas twisted her, making her more ruthless. Her loss drove her to hurt others.
She ultimately sacrifices herself to save Billy’s life, but believes that she cannot face Nicholas in the afterlife, and is hesitant to be reunited with him. The witch gets stuck between life and death and remains attached to the mortal world.
In the climax scene of Agatha All Along, Billy closes the door to the Witches’ Road and Agatha accompanies him on a journey to find his brother Tommy.
