ABC's The Rookie has given the audience some of the more memorable television characters over the years. One such character was Captain Zoe Andersen from season 1, played by Mercedes Mason. The fans of the show were left shocked when the character was killed in episode 16 titled Greenlight. While protecting the series protagonist John Nolan, played by Nathan Fillion, Captain Andersen succumbs to a gunshot during the episode.
Who is Zoe Andersen?
Zoe Andersen was the Commanding Officer of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Mid-Wilshire Division. A former Marine, Andersen believed in following rules to the t when it came to her official duties. She was known for her strong and likable personality. Andersen maintained a great rapport with her officers and was especially compassionate towards rookies on the force. Andersen was also instrumental in recognizing the potential of John Nolan. She was greatly supportive of his new life as an officer in the LAPD. Her tough personality and warm presence made her a stand-out character.
What Happened to Captain Andersen?
In the episode Greenlight, Captain Zoe Andersen decides to ride with Officer John Nolan during his patrols. They are trapped by members of Southern Front, a gang of white supremacists led by Cole Midas. She attempts to help Nolan by fighting off two thugs. But in the process, she gets shot in the neck and dies on the spot. The Rookie fans regard Andersen’s final scene where Nolan sits with her helplessly, as one of the tragic moments on the show. After her death, Nolan goes on to arrest Midas.
Zoe Andersen was a huge part of the show and many fans took to social media to share their displeasure over her death. During a session on X, the showrunner of the show, Alexi Hawley said,
‘...we went back and forth about it in the writers' room. But it ultimately felt like the most dramatic and powerful way to impact our story.’
About the death in The Rookie’s inaugural season, he further said,
‘It's heartbreaking. But the stakes of this new life Nolan has chosen are all too real, and we can't run away from them creatively.’

Mercedes Mason made a significant impact with her character Captain Zoe Andersen on The Rookie. The actress has also been a part of several other popular police shows such as NCIS, CSI: NY and Castle.
