Culinary Class Wars continues to generate immense traction with its high-intensity unscripted reality television series. Recently, the culinary competition concluded with a bang - crowning Black Spoon 'Napoli Matfia' or Chef Kwon Sung-Jun as the overall winner. It was no easy feat because he was against the legendary White Spoon Chef Edward Lee - a dominator on the show.

Chef Sung-Jun took home the title of winner and a whopping prize worth 300 Million Won ($220,500)! The finale aired on October 8, 2024, and saw Sung-Jun and Lee engage in a battle royale for the title. Both chefs have grown to be fan favorites over the season, concocting exemplary and visually stunning dishes.

The winner Sung-Jun decided to flaunt not just his skills as a chef, but added a more personal reflection about his character to the plate. His dish had both judges and past participants of Culinary Class Wars gobsmacked by the inspiration and innovative nature of the dish.

The Black Spoon Chef took a savory route and made ‘Pistachio Lamb Ribs,’ arranged elegantly on the plate with the meat cooked to utter perfection. In addition, he created a heart-shaped pasta that was infused with beetroot (for color) and was filled with lamb’s heart and shoulder. For texture, he ensured to add sage and truffles to elevate his dish.

The highlight however was the colorful and silky sauce which he used the Barolo wine from Italy’s Piedmont region as a base flavor influencer. Furthermore, he paid homage to his date of birth by including aged wine - the same Barolo from 1995. Sung-jun claimed it’s his favorite wine and the entire dish is “Italy on a plate.”

Chef Lee innovated the classic Korean dish Tteokbokki as a dessert! He made a semifreddo primarily from rice cakes - the ethos of his dessert followed by fluffy Italian meringue and whipped cream.

To tie his dish together, he combined spicey gochujang paste with caramel to create the most decadent and flavor-bomb-like sauce. He chose minari makgeolli as a choice of refreshing beverage to complement the meal.

What was the challenge for the finale of Culinary Class Wars?

The judges Paik Jong-Won and Ahn Sung-Jae did not go easy on them for the finale and pushed them to their absolute limits to exhibit panache, technique, and flair on a plate. They were asked to put their reputations on the line, especially since the penultimate challenge was titled: ‘Name-on-the-line Dish.’

The ultimatum was to create a dish mirroring their journey as cooks and channel their creativity and techniques reflecting their years of experience. As always, the judges debilitate their decision based on whether or not taste prevails above all. Apart from creating aesthetically pleasing plates, they delivered on the assignment given to them.
