The Great British Bake Off began with all the sweetness fans anticipated, but as the show progressed, each week brought increasingly challenging tasks and eliminations. On October 22, 2024, the show aired its fifth episode, and elimination.

Like every week, this episode focused on a theme. The fifth episode was 'Pastry Week', and the home bakers went through all three challenges as they did before.

For the Signature Round, the bakers had to bake the perfect Frangipane Tart, with the rich flavor and smooth texture maintaining the delicacy and sweetness at the same time. This French delicacy had bakers standing on the verge of gasping every time the judges visited their stations.

However, few bakers managed to impress judges with the perfect unity of flavor, texture, and presentation. The technical challenge was creating the finest Paris Brest. However, Andy was eliminated from the competition as his pastry didn't meet the mark of the judges.

It required the bakers to show their artistry and fitness in this round, while also maintaining the pressure of eliminations. Here is what the contestants baked for the Technical challenge of The Great British Bake Off:

  • Illiyin's 'Crown of Nuttiness' Paris-Brest
  • Gill's Lemon & Thyme Meringue Paris-Brest
  • Christiaan's Orange & Pecan Paris-Brest
  • Nelly's Pistachio Paris-Brest
  • Sumayah's 'Tree of Life' Paris-Brest
  • Georgie's Pistachio & Raspberry Paris-Brest
  • Dylan's 'Contrasts of Tea' Paris-Brest
  • Andy's 'All You Need Is Love' Paris-Brest

What happened in the Showstopper challenge and who got eliminated in week 5 of The Great British Bake Off?

In episode 5 of The Great British Bake Off 2024, eight home bakers poured their heart and soul into creating the best pastries for Pastry Week. The bakers showcased their skills, patience, and artistry across two rounds, impressing the judges with their hard work and dedication.

However, during the Showstopper round, they needed to give their all to fight for their place in the competition.

For the Showstopper round of The Great British Bake Off, the bakers were tasked with creating a freestanding pastry podium, which required a blend of artistic skill and engineering.

The challenge was to achieve a balance between flavor and presentation while ensuring the podium stood perfectly. Despite the difficulty of the task, some bakers triumphed over the challenge.

Some contestants managed to succeed with this baking architecture, while others succumbed to the pressure. Gill impressed judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith in all three challenges, showcasing her consistency and skill.

As a result, she was named Star Baker of the Week and received applause from Paul Hollywood for her meticulous artistry.

Andy, who had a rough week on the show, witnessed his podium crumbling in front of him and realized that it was not his day. The baker from Essex had to bid farewell to his fellow bakers on the show as he was eliminated in episode 5, 'Pastry Week'. Paul Hollywood was upset seeing Andy leave so early and said:

"It’s so sad to see Andy go. I adore the guy, but he just didn’t have a good week.”

Andy acquired the passion for baking from his mother in his early childhood and always wanted to pass on the tradition to his daughter, Maisie. The home baker from The Great British Bake Off had a sad exit but told the cameras after his elimination:

"(It’s) just sad you know, I have had such a fantastic time, I have had so many laughs. But that’s the standard, c’est la vie.”

The Great British Bake Off 2024 airs on Channel 4 at 8 pm BST every Tuesday.
