This case is the focus of a documentary entitled The Texas Cheerleader Murder Plot. In 1991, Wanda Holloway of Channelview, Texas, was implicated in a murder-for-hire plot against Verna Heath, the mother of Amber Heath, a high school cheerleader.

Holloway's daughter, Shanna, had not made the cheerleading team at Channelview High School, and Holloway thought Amber's position on the team was the reason.

She then concocted a plot to kill Verna Heath, believing that would open a space for Shanna. The documentary will air on December 18 on Investigation Discovery. In this, the documentary would look at the psychological and social circumstances that led to the case.

Plot and Role of Terry Harper - The Texas Cheerleader Murder Plot

When Shanna failed for the second time to make it to the cheerleading team, Holloway developed a conviction that Verna had influence over the school system that was preventing Shanna from success. By removing Verna, Holloway thought Shanna would succeed.

To commit the murder, Holloway contacted her ex-brother-in-law, Terry Harper, to seek his assistance in arranging a contract hit. Harper refused the request and reported the crime plot to the police. Harper cooperated with the police, wearing a wire while recording conversations with Holloway.

In these conversations, Holloway provided details about Verna Heath, including her address, schedule, and habits. Holloway offered $2,500 in cash and a pair of diamond earrings as collateral for the hitman. During one recorded conversation, Holloway indicated that she did not care whether Verna lived or died.

Initially, Holloway planned to have both Verna and Amber killed, but she later decided that killing only Verna would be enough. Harper's tapes became the evidence in the case

Arrest and Litigation

The authorities arrested Wanda Holloway before the crime could be committed. The case attracted much attention because of the unusual motive behind the crime and Holloway's suburban background, which contrasted sharply with the nature of the plot.

Holloway was indicted for solicitation of capital murder. At her trial, the tape recordings were introduced into evidence, and Holloway was convicted. The defense claimed that Holloway was acting out of love for her daughter, but the jury returned a guilty verdict.

Initially, Holloway was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Later on, her conviction was overturned on grounds of juror misconduct. Holloway was then retried. On this occasion, Holloway entered a no-contest plea and was given a reduced sentence of 10 years. Holloway served six months in prison before being paroled.

The aftermath

The case had a long-lasting impact on the Heath family and the Channelview community. Verna Heath was not injured but was emotionally traumatized and received a lot of media attention. Her daughter Amber, who was an innocent teenager caught in the crossfire, suffered the stigma of the incident for years.
