Who was in the trunk at the end of The Lincoln Lawyer Season 3?
After Mickey’s arrest, viewers got a glimpse of the dead body in the trunk. However, it was hard to say who it was. Mickey was just on his way to celebrate the success of the case he had won. Just then, a police officer stopped him and asked him to give his license, insurance, and registration.
The police noticed blood dripping from the car’s sides. He asked Mickey to open the trunk, but he resisted. This is when the police officer handcuffed him. On opening the trunk, they found a dead body inside it.
It turns out that the corpse was none other than Sam Scales. You might remember Sam from earlier seasons of The Lincoln Lawyer. He’s a professional con artist who has been in and out of trouble. He used to often seek legal help from Mickey and his team.
Who exactly was Sam Scales?
If the name sounds familiar but you're struggling to place him, here’s a quick refresher. Sam Scales was introduced back in The Lincoln Lawyer Season 1. He was a con man, who used to frequently get into trouble.
He would pull off scams under the guise of charity. He used to ask people to donate gift cards or money, supposedly to help those in need. Then, he would pocket a large amount from the donations for himself. Throughout the past seasons, he made some brief appearances.
In Season 3, he was in the spotlight again for yet another scam. This time, he had been collecting gift cards meant for workers on strike, but kept two-thirds of the funds for himself. Lorna had even defended him earlier in the season.
Both, the prosecution and defense offer him a deal: pay back the stolen money, and they’ll drop the charges. But, Sam doesn’t take the deal. Mickey warns him that if he doesn’t cough up the cash, things could get deadly for him. And now, Sam's body is stuffed in the trunk of Mickey's car.
The discovery of Sam’s body raises a lot of questions. It puts Mickey in a tricky situation. Mickey’s comment that Sam should pay back his legal debts or face the consequences, makes Mickey’s arrest all the more suspicious and it looks like someone may be trying to frame Mickey.
Throughout Season 3, Mickey handled complex cases. He exposed corruption and made some enemies along the way. With Sam’s body in his car trunk, someone may be trying to pin a murder on Mickey. Now, Mickey might have to defend himself in court.
What’s next?
There is no official announcement on whether there will be a Season 4 of The Lincoln Lawyer. But, Ted Humphrey, the co-showrunner, had hinted at the possibility. He also added that if there is one, the plot will revolve around Mickey working his toughest case, that is, his own.
While the cliffhanger does raise plenty of questions, we have to wait till the next season, if any, to see how things play out for Mickey Haller of The Lincoln Lawyer.
