Sitcoms in Hollywood, like The Big Bang Theory and FRIENDS, have been some of the best projects ever made in the genre of comedy.

However, a significant part of many old sitcoms was the inclusion of a live audience, where the show would be shot in front of live viewers who would react to all the moments on the show, making it all the more of an authentic experience.

Although some shows, like Modern Family, skipped the live audience part and instead focused on other tropes, like mockumentaries, shows shot with live audience reactions hold a separate charm on television. This includes highly successful shows such as FRIENDS, Seinfeld, Two and a Half Men, and The Big Bang Theory.

The show was shot with live audiences present on set, something that producer Chuck Lorre has confirmed with photos from the show's set after he faced rumors about the show using a laugh track. The creator posted a photo of the live audience and captioned it writing:

"We are often accused of using a 'laugh machine' on the Big Bang Theory. This is our laugh machine"

In 2016, the show even broke the Guinness World Record for having the largest live audience present for the eleventh episode of their ninth season, titled "The Opening Night Excitation."

More about live audiences on shows

A lot of popular shows utilize live audience reactions as behind-the-scenes shots portray how they take in audience reaction as feedback to the show's jokes to improvise lines and dialogues, making it an effective contributing factor for series makers.

In the United States, you can get tickets to join live audiences for shows by winning giveaways for rare shows and by applying for tickets. However, getting a ticket is not equivalent to scoring a seat as they are usually on a first-come, first-served basis. Live audiences are also common for game shows and late-night shows starring TV hosts, both of which fans can apply to be a part of.

Having a live audience comes with its own set of pros and cons. The pros are heavily focused on getting instantaneous feedback from the audience over the content, which allows the series creators to edit and modify scenes accordingly.

Chuck Lorre has opened up about how the live audience helps them determine if the content they are putting out in The Big Bang Theory is funny or not. Speaking to Wrap, the director said:

“If you’ve been to tapings, you know that silence is horrifying. But it tells you that you’ve made a mistake. In essence, it’s what movies do with focus groups. We do that every week on a four-camera show. Those 200 people in the stands are telling us we weren’t not as smart as we think we are, and they don’t really care if I think it’s funny. It’s whether they think it’s funny. It’s humbling, but it’s also an endless education.”

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Prime Video.
