Taylor Sheridan's prequel series to Yellowstone, 1923 Season 2, finally came to an explosive finale, closing in another chapter on the Duttons and finally clearing a major mystery about the parent series.

The Season 2 finale saw the birth of Spencer and Alex's son, but the happiness is marred with Alex succumbing to hypothermia and dying moments after delivering her baby. But she did name her baby before dying, after Spencer's brother John.

This naming of her son is important as it reveals that Spencer's son will be John Dutton II, Kevin Costner's John Dutton III's father in Yellowstone. This also confirms that Spencer is John Dutton III's grandfather.

John Dutton II briefly appeared in a flashback in the parent series and could likely be a protagonist in the upcoming spin-off, 1944.

More on Spencer's son John Dutton II in 1923 Season 2 in our story.

How was Spencer Dutton's son born in the 1923 Season 2 finale?

After an emotional reunion between Alex and Spencer, where she finally reveals that she is pregnant, the hunter finally takes her onboard the train to get treated. While Alex managed to keep her alive in the car, the doctor onboard reveals that she has suffered extreme frostbite and could succumb to hypothermia.

Spencer leaves Alex in the care of his Uncle Jacob and goes to deal with Donald Whitfield's men in the 1923 Season 2 finale. He finally eliminates all of the pending threats on the ranch and is reunited with his Aunt Cara.

Back at the hospital, Alex learns that both of her legs and one hand have to be amputated, as frostbite and hypothermia have taken over her body. If not amputated, she would die because of her necrotic extremities. The doctors also advised her to get the baby aborted, as he/she would not survive the surgery.

However, Alex insists on delivering the baby prematurely, gives birth to a son, and names him John, making him John Dutton II. This finally clears up that this son would grow up to become John Dutton II, Costner's John Dutton III's father.

The doctors again advised her to get surgery, and they also revealed that the baby's undeveloped lungs would give up after one hour. However, Alex spends the remaining one hour with her son, and as a result of this, she succumbs to hypothermia and dies after leaving her baby in the care of her husband. As suggested in the show's final scene, John Dutton II is cared for and brought up by Cara and Jacob.

The 1923 Season 2 finale suggests Spencer's second son might be illegitimate

While the 1923 Season 2 finale finally clears up that Spencer and Alex's son John will grow up to become John Dutton II, Yellowstone's patriarch's father, the hunter did have a secret second son.

As revealed by Elsa Dutton's narration, Spencer did have another son with a widow whom he met years after Alex's death. But since the hunter did not want to replace Alex as his wife, he never married the widow or anybody after Alex's death.

This suggests that Spencer's unnamed second son would have been illegitimate, considering that he was born out of wedlock. Considering the laws at that time, it is unlikely that this second son had any part in Spencer's will and the Dutton ranch, which rules him out as John Dutton III's grandfather, making Alex's newborn son the only contender.
