Fan-adored animated fantasy TV series, The Dragon Prince (also known as The Dragon Prince: Mystery of Aaravos from Season 4), is back on Netflix with Season 7. It brings back all major characters in the narrative but one of the tragic figures— Sol Regem.
Since the narrative of the show revolves around magical creatures like elves and dragons, among the key figures is Sol Regem, also called Anak Arao. As seen in the previous season, Sol Regem is introduced as an Archdragon of the Sun, and the former King of the Dragons. His story began 1,200 years before Azymondias (the Dragon Prince) was born, and known for his exceptional appearance. He was once considered among the noble dragons, but eventually became a bitter and vengeful creature when blinded by Ziard.
It was his anger and hatred that led to the tragic fate of Sol Regem's beloved mate, Aithne Solaire, whose death haunted him for years. The truth behind his lover's death was finally revealed in season 6, which led Sol Regem to choke to death.
Continue reading to explore why Sol Regem killed his own lover.
Who was Sol Regem's lover in The Dragon Prince?
As mentioned above, Sol Regem once had a mate named, Aithne Solaire— the former dragon queen. Despite not appearing in the series, Aithne Solaire plays a significant role as her death shapes Sol Regem's character and the narrative of The Dragon Prince.
Solaire's mysterious death marks the beginning of a tragic turning point in Sol Regem's life, as he remains haunted by the loss until his last breath. Considering Sol Regem's concern about knowing how his beloved mate died, it is safe to say that she was dearly loved.
It was in The Dragon Prince Season 6, Episode 8, "We All Fall Down," when Sol Regem choked to death after learning that he killed Aithne Solaire. As seen in the episode, Aaravos appears before Sol dies, and asks him if he wants a reward, which he considers as "The mercy of truth". The Startouch Elf revealed:
"The answer to the mystery that has haunted you for a thousand years. What happened to your beloved mate who disappeared?"
Upon hearing this, Sol Regem calls Aaravos, a betrayer, and asks what happened to Aithne Solaire. Aaravos continues:
"It was you. You killed her... Go on, breathe deep... In your fury, you buried her alive."
This dark truth about Sol Regem's mate leaves him devastated and he chokes to death. This moment marked the end of Sol Regem's story, a former dragon king who died of his bitterness and rage in The Dragon Prince.
Was Sol Regem blind when he killed Aithne Solaire in The Dragon Prince?
One of the major turning points in Sol Regem's life was when he became blind after Ziard, the human mage hit him with a fireball. This resulted in Sol Regem becoming blind, further transforming him into a dark creature.
Additionally, Aaravos exploited Sol Regem’s rage and pride, and indirectly led Sol Regem to unintentionally bury Aithne alive in a fit of blind fury. This explains that Regem was indeed blind during the time of his mate's death.
