In The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 3, Ellie begins her journey to Seattle to avenge Joel’s death. After the town council of Jackson refuses to send people to avenge Joel's death, Ellie leaves with Dina to find Abby, without anyone knowing. Other than Ellie’s journey to Seattle, a new group was also introduced in the new episode.

Just around the 20-minute mark in the episode, we see a small, cloak-wearing group wandering around the forest. As the man explains to the little girl beside him, we learn that these people might be moving towards Seattle due to the war. Although in the episode, no explanation is provided yet, the group is actually part of a religious cult called the Seraphites. The war the people were talking about is between the Seraphites and Abby’s group, W.L.F.

More on this in our story.

Who are the Seraphites in The Last of Us Season 2?

After the tragic events in the previous episode, The Last of Us Season 2 has introduced another new twist from the game, in the form of the Seraphites. In the game The Last of Us Part II, the Seraphites are introduced as a primitive cult that lives and follows the teachings of a woman known as the Prophet. It is revealed that the Prophet encountered a vision during the early days of the Cordyceps outbreak, according to which all of humanity is being punished for their sins and their dependence on worldly pleasures like technology.

This vision made the Prophet start this new religious cult which rejects the use of any type of modern technology, hence they use handmade weapons such as the bow and arrows. Other than that, they also live on an island just outside Seattle. They are a mysterious group who also have their own symbol, the meaning of which is not yet provided. However, there are many theories around it: some think it's a Pisces symbol, and others suggest that it might be a wound with stitches, as for this primitive cult, wounds are significant.

In the latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2, several people from the group had scars on both sides of their faces. It is due to their initiation process, in which they have to make a cut on both sides of their faces and let it heal naturally. This process makes those scars in their faces, and these scars are also why the W.L.F uses the derogatory term, scars, for them. As per their Prophet, the scars are to remind them of the imperfections of humanity.

What is the significance of the Seraphites in The Last of Us Season 2?

Other than introducing the Seraphites in The Last of Us Season 2, episode 3 also provides a glimpse of the brutality of the ongoing clash between the religious cult and Abby’s group. As Ellie and Dina take the same route through the forest, they encounter the group introduced at the beginning of the episode, slaughtered.

Their wounds did not look like they were attacked by the infected, therefore, it might be caused by the W.L.F. Moving forward, the series might get more violent as Ellie and Dina have inserted themselves in the land of an ongoing war to take their revenge from Abby, which will prove to be a difficult task as we saw the extent and power of W.L.F in the episode.
