Doctor Who is one of the most popular sci-fi shows on television. The show revolves around a humanoid called the Doctor, who travels in time and space on his spaceship TARDIS, and helps people by fighting against their oppressors and dangerous criminals.
The Doctor can regenerate after being gravely injured, and reincarnate into a new body. He belongs to a fictional race of extraterrestrial people called the Time Lords and has a companion on his adventures who serves as co-lead of the series.
The show is currently focused on the 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, who made his debut in the 14th season of the revival series. He is joined by Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, who serves as his companion in Doctor Who season 14.
Ruby Sunday is the Fifteenth Doctor’s companion in Doctor Who season 14
Ruby Sunday is introduced in the 2023 Doctor Who Christmas Special, The Church on Ruby Road. Born on Christmas Eve in 2004, Ruby was left outside a church by her mother. She is later adopted by Carla Sunday, who raises her in Manchester along with other foster kids.
Ruby grows up to be a kind, curious, and determined girl. At 19, she decides to search for her birth parents. However, the goblins start to create trouble in her life. They kidnap Carla’s new foster baby, Lulubelle.
Ruby then teams up with the Fifteenth Doctor to save the baby and stop the goblins from going back in time to erase her as a newborn. After the Doctor defeats the Goblin King, Ruby is amazed by time travel and joins the Doctor in the TARDIS as his companion.
She then accompanies him on all his adventures, including saving children on a space station, facing the music god Maestro, and communicating with alien creatures to rescue a town. Meanwhile, she keeps searching for her biological mother.
In the episode The Legend of Ruby Sunday, the Doctor takes her to UNIT to find out more about her origins. The two then face an ancient villain, Sutekh. Ruby uses her intelligence and bravery to help defeat Sutekh and undo the destruction he causes.
Finally, UNIT identifies her mother as Louise Miller, who abandoned Ruby to protect her from her abusive stepfather. Ruby then has a heartwarming reunion with Louise and introduces her to the Sunday family.
After all her adventures, Ruby decides to leave the Doctor in the final episode of season 14 and returns to Earth to be with her family. The Doctor respects her choice and promises to visit her again someday. However, her story is going to continue in Doctor Who season 15.
Ruby Sunday’s role in Doctor Who season 15
As Ruby Sunday decided to leave the Doctor in the previous season, her future in the show was left certain. It was then announced that actress Varada Sethu would be joining the show as the Doctor’s new companion, Belinda Chandra. This further cast doubt over Ruby’s appearance in Doctor Who season 15.
However, it has now been confirmed that Ruby is very much a part of the next season. In the 2024 Christmas Special episode, she makes a cameo appearance, as she gets a call from her mother. Meanwhile, the Doctor is keen to call her and talk to her but is not able to do so.
This shows Ruby will continue being an integral part of the show. The Doctor Who season 15 teaser also depicts her return to the series, hinting her story is far from over. In the upcoming season, both Ruby and Belinda will serve as companions of the Doctor.
The trio will take it upon themselves to fight threats and save innocent lives. Showrunner Russell T Davies confirmed in the documentary Doctor Who: Unleashed that the series will continue to explore Ruby’s story, and will delve more into her family. He said:
“She’s coming back. A new companion is coming in, but you’ll see the three of them together. Three people in this TARDIS fighting evil. There’s good stuff to come, there’s really crucial stories for Ruby to come, and her family! The story of that family hasn’t finished yet, that will all make sense when you see it, so…More to come!”
Doctor Who season 15 will premiere on BBC and Disney+ in 2025.
